How to edit the DCs onboard flash

Post by Hashmire420 »

Recently i was playing with Chankast and I started Editing the Flash_dc.bin where i found out you could edit a certian place in the hex, that would control if it was a pal, japanese, Us, and a weird one that i think may be able to play all games.

So i was wondering what would i have to do to create a program that edits one place on the onboard flash.

i would like my very own japanese and pal dremcasts (im going to buy two more US) so this is something that seems a lot easier than importing.

IIRC, the Dreamcast's BIOS is on a ROM, which isn't writable.

I thought the flash is something else, like where the time and language info is saved.

That's the one and only reason to get a mod chip, and you don't even need to do that. Look for one of the several boot disks available.

I think what he's asking is if it's possible if someone created a program that would write to the flash to make it support different regions without the need of a boot disc or the mod chip.

The region is stored on partition 0 of the flash, which is not writable.

The flash is partitioned into separate parts. The one that contains the region setting is read-only, so you can't overwrite it. You can overwrite the settings part.
