Buying my mom a digital camera - recommendations

Post by Tall Israeli »

I'm buying her a digital camera for christmas, but I really don't know what to look for camera-wise. One of the 6 series Poweshots that 7.1 mega pixels goes for $230, which seems too good to be true. Also, I'm not fond of the interface setup. I prefer the sd400 interface setup. She's really looking for something simple to use and isn't too high end.

So true. Kodak cameras are garbage.

Fuji, Nikon, and Canon are all good buys.

I'll have to second that. My schools yearbook class has had a cannon digital camera that has been through hell and it still works. It's been dropped so many times. The case is dented to hell, but it still takes beatiful pictures.

After working at two electronics retailers for a total of two-ish years, the two cameras I will recommend with confidence she'd probably like would be the Kodak Z740/742 and the Sony W5.

That's the ONLY Kodak camera I'd ever, ever, EVER buy, though. And then only for the burst mode and long zoom/

The best tip I have for you is... do NOT get a Sony camera. We have a Cybershot, and it always gives shocks while it's plugged to the computer's USB port!

I bought a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P43 around this time last year and it's one of the best things I've ever bought. Excellent camera.

My dad has a Cybershot. It's a wonderful camera. I have a Gateway camera, however, and I wish I would have spent the extra money to get a better brand. My Gateway takes crappy pictures.

Sorry, it was too funny and too easy to pass up.
I have a Casio Exilm Z50. I adore it. So look into Casios, you may be surprised.

I had a Kodak Easy share from a long time ago. It was great. But when it died ( recently it did ) it died hard. Went from working one day to nothing at all.

Is size important? If it being big or small doesn't matter, I'd suggest getting a bit bigger one. In my experience, you get better pictures on them in general. They tend to point a bit more naturally, and are easier to hold steady. They're also often cheaper.

However, of course, this really depends on what she's going to use it for. I know my CD Mavica (BTW, that's another Sony camera that is great - had it for like 4 years and still works great) is too big to lug around when I'm going to some things. When I went to Japan, I had to borrow my mother's digital Camera, which is a Canon. They're nice, but it seemed a bit too fragile to me. Broke on a single drop. Granted, it wasn't exactly a good drop, but still. :P

I'll buy her a camera with 256mb card since she'll barely be using the thing.
