Is having a tv next to your computer a bad thing?

Post by Sir Savant »

Yeah, not a big one, a 12 inch, but it is an older model. So I was wondering if the electromagnetic waves (correct me if I am wrong) emitted from the tv would effect the computer parts. Any ideas (whether it does and what I can do to stop it, whether it be buy a shield or just move it)?

I have had my TV right beside my computer for over a year now without any problems. My TV is small aswel.. just 13 inches.

Most people have CRT monitors next to their computers, so I would assume it isn't a problem.

Alright, thanks. I just thought it might work like sticking a magnet onto the side. In which case it scared me a little because that would be my fourth hard drive failure in as many months.

Well, I suppose you could have problems, but nothing major. I had two CRTs next to each other and the geometry on both started changing by itself.

buy a compass :p

you can't compare a TV to a CRT monitor because CRT monitors are build to have a magnetically sheilded output were as TVs usually are not (unless they've drastically changed the design recommendations of TVs since i was at college studying electrical engineering)

yes you could have major problems,

a large tv will have a large electromagnetic field and a modern harddisc is still a highly delicate magnetic storage medium,

i wouldn't have them next to each other.

other things which could also produce the same unwanted elecromagnetic fields include 'normal' stereo speakers and hifi amps (again both are typically unshielded)

Get a TV tuner card so your computer becomes a TV... :P

I ain't worried too much about the hard drive, just the components. It is an older pc (Compaq Deskpro) so it may not stand up to a small tv. Anyways, the only reason I ain't getting a tv tuner card is that than I might have to take another pc out of storage because I need all my screen real estate (unless someone has two pci video cards they can give me :) ). Oh well.

funny, it didn't look like a myth when we mapped out the magnetic field from a TV in the lab.
