The 77-year-old was attacked by a man with an axe at her home in Bury, Greater Manchester.
The attacker, who ransacked the victim's house for valuables, held her hostage for 10 hours, later forcing her to withdraw ?500 from her life savings at a bank in the city centre.
She was then dumped in the city centre at 10am after her horrific ordeal which began shortly after midnight on Monday, police said.
Superintendent Peter Schofield, of Greater Manchester Police, said the attack was "despicable".
The victim?s family said: "We are all very distressed by the incident and share a feeling of utter disgust."
