fancy pants sumo wrestlers

Post by mattcky666 »

A furious row has broken out in the traditional world of Japanese Sumo wrestling - and it's all a load of pants.

Vast Sumo wrestlers generally compete naked but for a "mawashi", an arrangement of wrapped cloth that preserves a bare minimum of modesty.

But in order to encourage youngsters into the sport, Sumo's amateur association hit upon the idea of allowing them to wear "sumo pants", a more substantial garment similar to cycling shorts.

"Pubescent kids are not going to want to take part if they don't look cool," local newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun quoted one local amateur Sumo official as saying.

However the sport's professional body, the Nihon Sumo Kyokai, has made clear that it will not allow wrestlers in pants to take part in youth tournaments at the venerable national stadium in Tokyo, the paper said.

"The national stadium has its rules and ways of doing things," the paper quoted a Sumo Kyokai spokesman as saying.

"We have no intention of allowing children in pants into the ring."

I don't see the big deal. Let the kids practice in the hot pants, if that'll make them feel more comfortable, and get kids who would otherwise be hesitant to sign up. But if you want to play a sport competitively, you gotta wear the uniform.

Will most of the pants even fit on the Sumo's? That's gonna need a lot of custom work.

I don't think the pants are for traditional Sumos. They're just for kids at that tender age.

Thats sorta similar to highschool wrestling. Singlets can be considered embarrasing, but in practice we always wear regular workout clothes. Thats how it should be for sumo, don't have to wear uniforms in pracitce, but just regular things. Would work a lot better
