help dreamcast laser,pleade i love my dreamcast

I have a big problem,my dreamcast laser drive is fucked up.My question is can i use a portable cd laser ora a dvd or cd pc drive insteda of it???I ve searched in the forum,and i find tray loading dreamcast,but i don t understand if it use the original laser lens or the dvd or cd drive laser lens.For me will be usefull even if i can read only backup with this mod,cause i backed up all my original games (im against piracy).Please help me i m italian and here you will only find used dreamcast for 100?,too much,on e bay i can see some in usa for 15$ but the shipping to italy are 45$.Help me i love sega dreamcast for me it s the best console in the world!!!Will be helpfull even if someone can sell me a dc gdrom drive!!!!Or if you can give me a link to a tutorial or information about using a dvd cd or portable drive instead the dreamcast one,even if you have to do super modding to it

You might want to try cleaning the lens. May I ask what region your Dreamcast is from (i.e. PAL, NTSC, or NTSC-J). I have an extra GD-Rom drive.

buy a dreamcast at funcoland swipe the laser out and replace it with yours and return the unit as defective.

i ve tried to clean the lens and even to pot tweak it,but i have no results.If you have an extra gd rom i m really interested,no need to tell you what version my dreamcast is ,cause gdrom are the same in all version,beaside my dreamcast it s a pal version.

i dont see why you couldent just swap it with a cd players laser. the dc laser can read cds so a cd player laser should be able to read gdroms

so i can really swap the lens with a cd or dvd one???Can i use a pc dvd drive and just connect the cable from the board of the dreamcast to the motors and the lens???Will really it work???

ok i need the gd rom unit but need to know the price with shipping to italy,because if it will cost too much i will buy it from ebay,and even if it have problems to read games backups

Can't even mention that here.

I dont think it matters what region the GDROM you replace it with is from. If you want you could tweak your laser to get more out of it, but it sounds like its about to die anyway

Talking about backups is not permitted here, regardless whether or not you have the original. And for your GD-Rom issue, i wouldn't suggest trying to replace the gd-rom with a regular cd-rom, i believe its possible, but unless you have a lot of modding knowledge i wouldn't attempt it. You're better off trying to get a replacement from one of the members offering.

It's not legal. Even if it was, it wouldn't matter. Discussing backups is against the rules. You did read the rules before posting, didn't you?

What's the point in replacing the GDRom drive to play backups - you'll end up doing the same thing again and again, just replace the unit and play original games, the unit will last longer.

Backups means copied versions of games that had an original GD-ROM. An emulator, homebrew game or homebrew software doesn't have a GD-ROM that was sold in stores.

If it was sold in stores with an original disc, a CD-R of that is illegal.

Well yea I see where he is coming from I mean reverse enginering was required to make emulators,but dealign with that yu get your self into a ton of legal issues abotu being illegal or legal so I would not bring that up as no one really knows the answer.

Or instead of going to all the work of canabalizing lasers from other electronics, you could just buy a new dreamcast off ebay for <$20.
