inside3d has beginner tutorials, I suggest reading all of them.
If you're new to making mods then go ahead and make a TC but good luck, I started like 4 TC's which were never released because they sucked since I was learning back then. (I still have 'em also)

"I'm convinced RenegadeC is in fact not a human, but rather an experimental IRC/QuakeC bot who has the ability to randomly formulate mods and code them, programmed to have a distinct Canadian personality as well."

As you're new to QuakeC, I suggest reading this link first:
http://www.inside3d.com/qcspecs/qc-menu.htm
Then you can try to do something from the QC tutorials at Inside3D, and I also suggest that you go around modifying things in the QC code just to see what happens. Don't worry if you get errors or if your computer freezes when you try to run your mod, it's very, very common at the beginning. The best advice I can give to you is to, when you're coding, compile and test your code on Quake every time you change a few things. Don't wait to test it only after changing a lot of stuff, because if you get a error it will be harder to find out what's causing it.
