This is neither a prototype or a mod, it is a real piece of hardware released in japan. I guess yet another thing sega was trying...sort of like the jvc xeye. I yahooed the model number in the ebay auction and I found plenty of pages talking about this machine. This one has some pretty good pictures showing you where the cart slot is and the controller port. I dont think its worth 500 dollars, but it is a cool piece of hardware. http://superfami.com/aiwa.html

I didn't even notice that bottom removing part on eBay. it was on that site posted above. Looks like a peice of crap to me. It just seems like a CD player with what seems like Segas version of the GBA player :p except for AIWA CD players.

It's legit. I remember seeing photos in an early 90's issue of EGM. In those days, EGM was a crap magazine full of hype and pics of "secret" projects and stuff. Now it's just crap.
The price is outrageous. I'm pretty sure you can get one on Japan for a lot less...
It was one of the lame attempts by Sega to breathe life into the Mega CD, which was dead on arrival in Japan, and was doomed to the same fate in America. Still, some of the more interesting CD games were only released in Japan. (Lunar, for example).

Both Lunar games were released in the US on Sega CD by Working Designs.mariobro wrote:It was one of the lame attempts by Sega to breathe life into the Mega CD, which was dead on arrival in Japan, and was doomed to the same fate in America.
