Sega to Make an "Explosive Announcement" at E3

Post by az_bont »

RPGamer wrote:Sega has invited all press visiting E3 to attend a special event as soon as the show doors open, where an "explosive announcement" will be made. Understandably, the press has jumped all over the opportunity, and now you can't even RSVP to get there.

The most obvious conclusion to what will be made public is Sega's return to the hardware market. The Dreamcast, Sega's last foray into the console wars, was unquestionably a success in terms of the quality of its games. However, the Dreamcast was by no means a success in sales, which led the company into becoming a third party developer. Without a doubt, there are many who would love to see Sega develop a new console. But with the market becoming as oversaturated as it is, it may not be the best time for Sega to trek back into hardware.

There is the possibility that the announcement will have nothing to do with an impending return to hardware. Even though, Sega has undoubtedly created quite the buzz leading into E3. But if it has nothing to do with hardware, then what could it be?

A new Nights game. What can be more explosive than that?! Or Maybe instead of making a new console they will make a new portable, but that would be very very foolish.

If I had to make realistic predictions then it'll prolly be:
1. Sega making gaming computers like Alienware
2. Sega merging with another company.
3. Sega moving into another form of entertainment that has nothing to do with gaming.

GameSpot wrote:RUMOR #1: At E3, Sega will announce it is getting back into the console business.

Source: An e-mail blast inviting press to Sega's "mystery event" at E3.

The official story: "SEGA cannot comment on rumors relating to its exclusive press event on day one of E3. SEGA remains excited about its powerful lineup of yet-to-be announced titles."--Sega spokesman.

What we heard: Ever since Dreamcast production ceased in 2001, the console's diehard fans have held out hope that it would rise from the ashes. This week, hope came in the form of a one-paragraph press invitation to Sega's E3 presentation. "Learn about SEGA's 2004 line-up and hear BIG news you'd NEVER guess," read the invite, which promised "explosive news--something even YOU won't be able to guess!" (Emphasis in the original). Within minutes, Sega loyalists were churning out messianic predictions of a new and improved Dreamcast. "Financially revitalized, finally debt-free, Sega now firmly believes it has what it takes to rule the roost," read one. But before you break out the straightjackets, consider this: Amusement-machine giant Sammy is Sega's majority stockholder, and its president Hajime Satomi is Sega's chairman. This year, Sammy's new Atomiswave arcade platform will replace the veteran NeoGeo format. The NeoGeo also came in a home console version which had a customer base fanatical enough to shell out hundreds of dollars per game--in other words, a proven (if small) market. The Atomiswave's hardware is even more compact than the NeoGeo's. Sammy has announced Sega will focus on developing games for the Atomiswave. Could Sega's big announcement be a new, Sega-branded home console based on the Atomiswave? Or is all this much ado about nothing?

Bogus or not bogus?: Although it's an intriguing theory, it's probably bogus. Note to Sega: kudos for making one publicity e-mail go a long way.
Hardly the internet's most reputable source of videogaming information, but it does raise some interesting points.

I think its more likely that Sega will go exclusive to the Playstation brand.

There recent games on the Gamecube and Particularly Xbox haven't been selling in numbers they expected.

A portable dc like the nomad using the compact dc technology that was never released would rule. That probably would never happen though, considering the size of the gdrom drive.

Megaton?

Not that I'm implying this will turn out to be something mediocre and of little interest to most gamers..

Sega and Nintendo, being the only video game companies left in the video game industry, are merging and producing a new kick-ass console.

They might have had a tactic saved up all along. Say there done making hardware, wait a couple of years, then produce a breathtaking peice of hardware.

Still they got a lot of angry people who won't trust them. To be hoenst I won't by any peice of hardware from them at first, I got burned on many of there old systems. If after a few months there is lots of good games I want for it, and things look like there goign good Id consider getting it.

Guess that is jumping ahead too much, could just be something completely unrelated. ID like to see a Nights 2, however the maker of the original games aid there would never be another Nights again. Claims it could never be as good as the original and he would never want to compete with that, or something along those lines.

Megaton 2!!!!!!!!!1111nineteen

I hope they don't go exclusive to the PS2 as not only would the games look worse but I would have to buy my third console this gen

I want it to be one of the following unlikely prospects:

A successor to the Dreamcast
Nights II
A new celshaded 2D Sonic game
Shenmue III
Panzer Dragoon Saga II
Streets of Rage 4
Exclusive to Nintendo's next console ( Nintendo + Sega console = )()( )
Phantasy Star 5

In fact just make it all those things

SNK had a certain amount of success with the home versions of their Neo Geo arcade machines - what about a similar thing from Sega, with their Naomi or Naomi 2 systems?

The DC had its fair share of Naomi ports didn't it?

True, but not all of them. Some, like Super Monkey Ball, made it to another consoles. Others, like The Maze of the Kings, didn't. But then it wasn't all that great a game anyway :|.

Alright, it was a daft suggestion.
