Slightly OT: USB 1.0 and 1.1 - what differences?

Post by Spector »

I'm asking because I'm looking for an external CD burner to do all this emu thing. I appear to have USB 1.0 connections at the back of my PC- but if I got a CD burner with a USB 1.1 connection, would it be compatible?
I'm going to jail for homicide.
Wish me luck.

Yep it would be compatible. I have an external CD writer that uses a USB 2.0 connection hooked up to a USB 1.0 port. The only difference as someone on these boards brought to my attention is that even though it's backwards compatible, it would work at the speed of a USB 1 device.

Seriously, consider a internal burner. They are dead easy to install, and burn a lot faster, and are a lot cheaper. Just a thought.

OK, what if he only has a laptop? In that case, he would have to get an external burner.

Getting an internal burner is an idea, but I want to use it not just for the DC emus, but to backup files from two PC's, and that's why I have to go external.

Don't use USB 1.0 for a burner. You should be able to get a pair of decently fast internal burners for cheap, maybe used if you're really cheap. Check ebay. USB 1.0 sucks for anything but interface devices (mouse, KB). It has a TOP SPEED of 1.5 mega BITS, that's not much faster than a 1X CD drive!!! So if you are sure your computer is not USB 1.1 equipped, do NOT use a USB drive. It's so slow, its pathetic. USB 1.1 is also really slow, but it could probably consistently do 4-8X. But USB 1.0? About an hour to fill a disc (assuming maximum speeds, which wont happen), that's pretty sick.

In case you're wondering:

CD drive 1X = 150KBytes/sec
USB 1.0 = 1.5 mbits/sec, or 192KBytes/sec max
USB 1.1 = 12 mbits/sec, or 1.5 Mbytes/sec max
USB 2.0 = 480 mbits/sec, or 60MB/sec max

So is an external *parallel* CD-Burner faster than a USB equivalent on a PC with USB 1.0, or is there no difference??

USB was designed with the intention of being faster than the other ports on your computer, therefore, I seriously doubt it.

I have a several-year-old parallel burner that burns at 2x or 4x. (doesn't seem to burn at 1x, even with the DiscJuggler demo)
