3DO, Phillips CD-I and Amiga CD32
Has anyone here played either one of these. And if so are they worth buying? Do they have any good games?

I had a Phillips CD-I and mines still work.It was an ok system.... nothing like Playstation though.. The only games I had for it was Hotel Mario & some addictive Tennis Game International Open or something like that.I was pretty much the only one hyped about this thing when it came out.No one around my area knew about it so when my friends come to my house.... I show them... & they ask me.... what the h*** is that... A VCR?

The 3DO was hot stuff. But it had few good games released for it, since it was practically dead on arrival. Some of the most memorable are:
Need for Speed- I guess you know that one.
Crash and Burn- another racing game, but combat oriented
Shockwave- a sort of space shooter, with a cool soundtrack
Super Street Fighter II - The BEST console conversion of the arcade legend.
Samurai Shodown- another perfect arcade port.
Sadly, the best graphics ever displayed by the 3DO were graphical demos... Not one developer ever took advantage of the system's 3D potential, which was about on a par with the N64... in 1993. But the pricetag gave you a clue about its true power.
The CD-I was a whole other story. It was a sort of experiment made by Nintendo to test the potential of CD games. That's why you see Nintendo licenses on a Philips system. But the hardware was really poor, suffering from the usual bandwidth problems with CDs at the time. A lot of games were based on FMV, and some were sprite-based, like the Mario games. No 3D games that I can recall.

Games that was entirely FMV usually sucked. Games like TimeGal and Masked Rider come to mind. The control was nothing more then pushing a button when it told you to. There was a couple of good ones though. Mad Dog was a fun shoot'em up game. There was also that Firefighter game on Segacd/32X which was ok. None of them was $50 worthy though.

I remember seeing commercials on TV when I was younger for either the 3DO or CD-I from Phillips. Showed some couple playing a spy-on-people-in-the-hotel type of game. It looked really cool so my older brother and I went to the mall to look at one...... I can't remember if we just couldn't find one or if it was too expensive...

I have a 3DO (original model) in it's original box, bought it recently for $80 with 4 games and a demo disc. If you get one, make sure you get the games Need For Speed, and Fifa Soccer!
Fifa Soccer's graphics and sound absolutely amazed me, considering the age of the 3DO!

A 32-Bit console from Amiga that seemed to be no better than the klunky old computers, other than the fact that they were in console form. If memory serves right, they had very large controllers.Calavera wrote:What about the Amiga CD32?
