Natural Disasters

Post by JellyWarrior »

Inspired by the DARC Hurricane thread in this topic i thought i'd ask:

Have you been involved in any sort of noteworthy natural disaster in your life?

I'd assume most people have, so if you have been in one then share your story with all us peeps here.

I'll start the ball rolling:

I live in Newcastle, Australia and on the 28th of December 1989 at 10:27am we had an earthquake measuring 5.5 on the richter scale. Of course 5.5 isnt too bad but the whole city has mines under it and they amplified the quake's strength.

I was almost 8 at the time. I remember I had got a tape recorder for christmas and I was listening to some tapes when the quake struck. Of course i got straight up to see what was happening. Mum thought that my brother got electricuted (yeah im sure that shakes the whole house). Anyways we all went outside and it stopped shortly after. Unfortunatley my poor tape recorder fell off the table and it broke.

We got out of it with some minor structural damage to our house and garage. Someone on my block's roof fell in. Other then that we were fine. The rest of the city wasnt as lucky, several buildings were damaged and a couple fell down. It was one of the most expensive disasters in Australian history and the only earthquake in Australia to claim lives, 8 in total.
