video problem

Post by nicp067 »

Hi, My DC suffer from a strange problem, there is no video output. All my game are loading properly with sound and control but my screen stay black.

I tried both s-video & composite cable with the same result. So I will be very glad if someone can help me out with this.

thank you.

Have you ever disassembled the console, perhaps engaging in the dreaded 'screw in the wrong hole' mistake?

dropping it in the floor can easily kill a dreamcast. the impact could of cracked, broke or moved something, make sure everything is secure inside, take it apart completly and put it back together to make sure everything is where it should be.

I did look inside if everything was ok. And tested a few thing looking at
board schematic but i dont have the enough knowledge to figure out
the problem source.

info: I dropped it on a carpet while powered on...thats bad

I hate these kind of unresolved problems, this advice is going to sound stupid too, but I have a playstation, and when I keep close to the floor and humidity it doesn't give sound (though when it was still new, like about 7years ago (it is a 1001 model) it didn't suffer from humidity), but if I left it enough hours running or ran a hairdryer close to it, it would began to work and restore the sound. This is usualy a symptom of dry joints, but dry joints don't usualy come due to dropping things.

Also check for chipped PCB print, or perhaps u had a dry joint and with impact it stopped working, try hitting it a bit again (not that you break or damage the laser) and see if the problem is intermitent, if so, search for dry joints

I am afraid that is all I can help you with.

I was looking at pin-out for the A/V out on my dreamcast and I was wondering...
maybe I can try with a VGA adaptor or at least look if there is some kind of
output on those pin.

It looks like that component is a resistor. Power should be going through it (unless it is only used when the VGA or whatever is plugged in or whatever.)

Your testing equipment may not be putting out enough juice for the current to pass through this resistor and that could be why you don't detect anything...

I have the exact same problem.
I've repaired my dreamcast twice before - once because it kept resetting and twice because the resistor on the controller port blew.
I havn't found a solution to this yet on the net.
I'm not sure why it happenned but I know I didn't drop it!
I think it's just age (3 years old).
If anyone has any idea what the prob is please reply - otherwise i'll just have to open it up and fiddle around.

I am pretty sure that this is the component causing my problem.
now I just need to know what it is to replace it.

I've opened it up and closed it up and it still doesn't work.
Looks like I'll have to get a new one. The parts for it seem too expensive to bother when you can get a brand new one. Still, if anyone has any ideas........
