Emulator VirtualAcorn

System PC - Windows

A commercial emulator, emulating the Acorn Archimedes computer (those of us in the UK will remember these from school, well us old farts anyway).
Image
It costs ?29.00 + ?1.50 P&P for he single user version, subsequent versions for more users cost more.
It comes in different varieties but the basic package (VirtualA5000) provides very similar functionality to an Acorn A5000. It includes:
-An appropriate version of the Acorn RISC operating system.
-Complete HTML RISC OS user manual with EasyStart front end.
-Virtual ADFS hard disk drive with the latest !Boot sequence.
-Bundled ROM based applications such as !Paint and !Draw.
-Complete ADFS hard disk image with hundreds of sample programs.
-Pre-configured memory settings which allows VirtualAcorn to run "out of the box".
-Access to the many thousands of RISC OS applications available.
Get from http://www.virtualacorn.co.uk/index2.htm If this has the same quality as Clonatos Amiga Forever package it could be good, just wont buy it at that price myself.

Emulator xyame 0.38

System PC - Linux/Windows/BeOS/MacOS

Multi system emu with support for PC Engine/NES/GameBoy/SNES, I dont know whats new.
Get from http://www.geocities.co.jp/Stylish/2068/yame.html however the homepage is in Jap so use http://babelfish.altavista.com/tr or similar to translate.

Emulator Basilisk II V1.0 snapshot

System PC - Windows/BeOS R4 (PowerPC and x86)/Unix with X11 (tested under Linux, Solaris 2.5, FreeBSD 3.x and IRIX 6.5)/AmigaOS 3.x

Mac emu, heres whats new:
- added support for on-the-fly video resolution and depth switching,
and gamma tables
- fsave/frestore emulation under AmigaOS and NetBSD/m68k always behaves
like a 68882/68040 FPU, eliminating the need for 68060 FPU patches
- added support for platform-independant mutexes, used by adb.cpp for
thread-safe mouse handling
- the TIME_OFFSET constant has been replaced by a (portable) function
TimeToMacTime(); file dates in ExtFS should now be correct
- ADBInterrupt() is no longer called from the 60Hz interrupt but has
its own interrupt flag, potentially increasing the smoothness of
mouse movement
- ether.cpp: implemented relatively platform-independant "AppleTalk
over UDP" mode that doesn't require any special kernel modules or
network drivers but can only interconnect instances of Basilisk II;
this is enabled by setting "udptunnel" to true
- Unix: windowed display mode supports different resolutions and color
depths, which can be switched on-the-fly
- Unix: Ctrl-F5 grabs mouse in windowed mode (enhanced compatibility
with games like flight simulators)
- Unix: X11 events are handled as soon as they arrive, outside of the
60Hz video refresh raster
- Unix: audio sample rate, bit depth and channel count are adjustable
in the MacOS "Sound" control panel
Get from http://www.uni-mainz.de/~bauec002/B2Main.html currently only the source is for download.

Emulator NeoPop 0.13

System PC - Windows

Neo Pocket emu (dont see many of them these days), heres whats new:
- Incorporated the RAZE z80 emulator, no sound yet, but it does boost compatibility a little with some commercial roms.
- Made a start on a scanline based renderer but it still needs more work, so the tile based one is used here instead.
- Fixed and Added a lot of instructions, \"Bust-a-Move Pocket\" now shows a lot of progress - but it is still unplayable.
- Added manual memory alteration and status flag changes for homebrew developers to fiddle with (Hope this helps Flavor :-)
- SMALL NOTE: A lot of commercial roms exploit a known memory hole in the emulator and can corrupt the internal settings. This means that the path, zoom and control settings will be forgotten. Sorry about this, but it's not a huge problem and simply comes about from incomplete emulation. (This problem has existed since v0.111 so it's not really a new thing, it's just that with more roms getting further into their execution, there are more that can corrupt the settings). I have tried to list all of the roms that cause this problem in the compatibility list, but I may have missed some. I you find a rom that isn't mentioned in the compitability list as corrupting settings, then please e-mail me and i'll amend the list for the next version.
- A lot of greyed out menu options have been included, these will be enabled as the features are added - I have no idea of when though. My focus is on compatibility features just now.
Get from http://www.emuxhaven.net/~neopop

Emulator PocketSMS demo 4d

System GBA

Master System emu, heres the news from the homepage "I found a new way to emulate the master system's virtual screen size. There is now NO background flickering! plus, it may be slightly faster because hblank interrupts are no longer being used. We have finally got sound running on hardware!! this should be hopefully included in the next version. I also optimised cycle counting a little more.
I really need to sort out a proper site for pocketSMS :). If there are any budding artists out there who would like to design a logo for the emulator (for the site & in the emulator's menus) that would be great!"
Get from http://www.angelfire.com/amiga/robware/index.html

Also the CD32 emu I reported a few days ago is fully useable even to people whos knowledge of German is limited to beer like me, I've been using it for a while and have had no trouble understanding it at all. This means that any of you put off by the fact its in German dont really need to wait for the English version, I'll still mention when the English one comes out though.

Onto another emu now, the wonderful s11emu is dead. Actually to be more accurate it was never really alive, it was just a demo of the System 11 emulation which will be put into Zinc, now as Zinc is meant to be the Linux Modeler from this we can determine that when Zinc comes it will most likely support Modeler & s11emu's roster of games and from the homepage forums it's confirmed that it will have some suprises as well. Also Zinc will be put out for Windows as well as Linux.

Emulator RetroCoder Spectrum Emulator V1.07

System PSX

Spectrum emu for the Playstation, heres the info:
-Full speed emulation of the Spectrum home computer (with sound!), has
*real* keyboard keyboard add-on support!!!
-This emulator requires a subdirectory called \"data\" that contains the
file \"spectrum.rom\" - the bios of the spectrum.
-This file is available almost everywhere on the net, if you can\'t find
it - then you shouldn\'t be using the emulator!
-Anyhow, the emulator requires original roms. When you have the roms

Emulator Kega V0.01

The oddly numbered Genesis/Sega CD emu gets updated & despite the number its the second release. Heres whats new:
-Fixed stupid Shadow/Highlight bug in DOUBLE mode (I accidentally deleted a line)
-Added 15-Bit Colour support
-Added information on what to do if your display is in 32-Bit Colour mode. This will later be replaced by 32-Bit Colour support.
-Kega no longer requires ASPI to be present (Just had to remove one line!)
-Made a few changes to the CD-ROM functions. Hopefully CD-ROM problems will be gone now.
-Rewrote Joystick handlers. Most, if not all, joysticks should work now.
-Added the ability to remap Joystick Buttons. See below for more info.
-Fixed the "APPLY" button, even though it isn't really neccessary, it was causing some confusion with several users. So now it works.
-ZIP support. This is my own UNZIP code, using nothing but the RFC docs for reference. (in ASM ;-) ok, I'm a speed freak...) Kega does not require ZLIB.DLL.
-Rewrite/Speedup to some CDC emulation code. Should improve SegaCD speed slightly.
-Fixed stupid bug in .BIN format for SegaCD images.
-Altered Genesis .BIN/SMD loader to handle incorrectly named files. Thanks to Dave for the hint ;-)
-Several compatibility fixes. More games should work now.
-Improved Country AutoDetection. Thanks to Eidolon for the info.
-Cleaned up ASPI code.
-Several other small fixes that I've forgotten about...

Emulator VB81 V1.30

System PC - Windows

Spectrum ZX81 emu, heres whats new:
- Significantly faster Z80 emulation core. You should have no problems running vb81 v1.30 at full speed in both SLOW and FAST modes even on a relatively low-spec Windows system
- Improved performance of both standard and hi-res display routines.
- Fixed a couple of bugs in the keyboard support which caused many games not to respond to key-presses.
- Added new 3x display magnification option.
New 'Allow writes to shadow ROM area' option allows access to the 8K-16K area of the memory map. Some games use this to provide hi-resolution graphics and custom character sets (FROGGER- for example).
- Fixed a bug in the interrupt routine that caused FRAMES to be incremented wrongly. Some games such as Rocket Man froze after a few seconds or minutes of playing.
- Fixed some minor bugs in the Z80 emulation. I believe the CPU emulation is now 100% correct in terms of timing, flag operation, and support for undocumented opcodes -- let me know if you think otherwise!
- Playtested against literally hundreds of ZX81 games to ensure full compatiblity. The only known problem is ZX-Xtricator, which has a custom overscanned hi-res display routine that does not yet work properly with vb81.
Get from http://freestuff.grok.co.uk/vb81

-Rewrote large pieces of the iNES mapper 64 emulation code.

have no affect on NTSC emulation, but PAL emulation is more accurate
now.
-Changed the behavior of indirect indexed CPU instructions to behave
more like they do on a real NES.
-Added support for double buffering and waiting for vertical blank.
-Changed the behavior of the menu hiding/showing code. Now when

thread-safe mouse handling

Emulator ACE v1.8

System PC - Windows

CPS1/2 & Neo-Geo emu, heres whats new:
-Added Metal Slug 3 (nd).
-Added Rockman the Power Fighters 2 (Japan).
-Added Viewpoint.
-Finally fixed save state bug in NeoGeo savestates. Now you can save and reload without hanging the sound chip.
-Fixed music in Shock Troopers (now it doesn't hang after intro).
-Added some basic renderers.
-Fileselector recognizes your mousewheel!

Get from http://www.vg-network.com/emulist.phtml ... ultiarcade

Emulator Kega V0.02

System PC - Windows

Genesis/Sega CD emu, heres whats new:
-Added workaround for bug in Nero's WNASPI32.DLL (thanks to all who made me
aware of this problem)
-Added the "incorrectly named ROM" fix to the ZIP support also, forgot to
do that last time ;-)
-Rewrote a SegaCD fix - I discovered why Snatcher keeps pausing a long time ago (before Kega's first release), and fixed it. I told Stef and he fixed
it in Gens too. The difference is, Stef's fix actually worked, and mine
didn't, because of a stupid typo. Should be OK now.
-MANY compatibility fixes - more games should now work.
-Added YM SuperHQ mode. When this mode is selected, the sound rate will
automatically change to 44100Hz, and my YM2612 core will go into SuperHQ mode. This is probably about as accurate as a YM2612 core can get at this present time (well, it will be once I finally get around to adding LFO support!) - the Sonic "signpost" sound is now accurate, for example. But this mode is probably (I haven't timed it...) a fair bit slower, so you
should probably only enable it for games that need it, or if you really
care about the odd sound not being *quite* right.

Homebrew ferk

System GBA

Small demo/game type thing, I'm not really sure yet. Heres some words from the auther:
my first gba coding attempt, and a nice high first target :]. basiccaly it was going to be a GTA clone. it currently has, fixed point usage (for positioning, speed and trig math), 4 layers, an alpha blended layer, rotated sprites, mask (other sprites and map)collisions, hud text output, dynamic tile reloading (tile maps that are bigger than fit into memory). unfortunetly, i forgot to make this into something distributable before i started on the gba dev compo entry (next project down there), but the game is moderatly playable, and compiles for me (see first section on how my stuff compiles). feel free to use the source but i like to know where this stuff goes (if anywhere) so do email if you plan to use it or make somehting of it. it could easily be optimized in many places, and the main stuff in the core has been updated in the hockey project. included are some random tools that i cant remember how to use.
enjoy!

Emulator Meka V0.62

System PC - Dos

SG-1000, SC-3000, Sega Mark III (+ FM Unit), Master System, Game Gear, Colecovision, Othello Multivision emu, heres whats new:
Compatibility notes:
- Sonic Blast [GG] minor glitches on title screen in non Japanese mode
has been confirmed to appear on a real Game Gear, so the game is now
marked as perfectly working.
- Thanks to the new 93c46 EEPROM emulator, Game Gear perfect compatibility
has now increased to 98.09% (counting like FreezeSMS does, that gives us
a whooping 150.00% :)
- Statistics: as far as I know, out of the 7 Game Gear games marked as
NON-WORKING, 5 games requires a simulation of LCD blurry persistance to
show up without flickering, 1 may be severly broken (not possible to
complete the game), and 1 is minorly broken.

As always, please report if you find out anything you feel as not emulated
PERFECTLY: even a single suspicious pixel, etc.. Thank you!

data properly. This fixes the following Game Gear games:
- Majors Pro Baseball
- Nomo's World Series Baseball (J)
- Pro Yakyuu GG League (J)
- World Series Baseball [A]
- World Series Baseball
- World Series Baseball 95
- Emulated onboard 64 kb RAM chip of Ernie Els Golf (GG).
- For the sake of accuracy, started to implement emulation of the four
slighty different VDP chipsets used in Master System 1/2, Game Gear and
Megadrive (compatibility mode). They all have subtle differences, causing
some games not to work perfectly on all of them.
- Fixed glitches in Ys (Japanese version), using 315-5124 VDP emulation.
- Fix bugs Z80 emulation, letting the Game Over screen for Rambo III to
appears normally - and this required many many hours of work! (thanks
to Jonas Persson for reporting the bug). Also changed behavior of EI
instruction, fixing Double Dragon for Game Gear (again).
- Fixed VDP refresh disable emulation for Game Gear.
- Fixed YM-2413 state restoring when loading a save with FM playing.
- Now store YM-2413 state initialization in VGM files.
- If available, store Japanese game name (in romanji form) in VGM files.
- Fixed shifted instruction offset in debugger.
- Updated TECH.TXT with instructions about how to build a DB-9 adapter
to connect SMS Joypads on your PC.
- Added full French (by Overture 1928) and Swedish (by Henrik Sankala)
localisations. Complete Italian localisation (by Andra Ballandino).
- Fixed minor display bug in the Inputs configuration tool.

Emulator PocketSNES V1.01.16

System PocketPC

SNES emu, heres whats new:
Changes since 1.01.14
---------------------
* Merged my changes with Darren's:
Darren: Code reorganization
Darren: Support for Black and White iPAQ 3135
Darren: Put landscape modes against a black background
* Centered landscape mode displays on the screen
* Combined 3800 drawing routines with the regular ones, some
more code reorganization
* Generalized some iPAQ 3800 speed increases to possibly benefit
future Pocket PC's with similar GAPI properties
* Speed improvements for iPaq 36xx/37xx in landscape mode
* Fixed flipped screen on landscape for some devices
* Optimized the portrait display modes for Cassiopeia E-125,
EM-500 and Jornada 54x/56x
* Specialized the threading to each draw routine to increase
speed
* Tweaked compilation options for MIPS and SH3 releases for
increased speed
* Fixed virtual keypad not displaying problem
NOTE: Double buffering not added to this code merge as it seemed
to have no visible effect and slows down the program
NOTE: One of the optimization options was to set the CPU
execution to 85%. This MAY make some games no longer
function. This setting will be made user-settable in the
near future.
NOTE: Landscape mode currently flipped for iPaq 38xx devices
for speed reasons. Currently being investigated for a
possible best-solution, set the key bindings for the
directional pad to the opposite what they should be
for correct keys for 38xx for now in landscape mode.

Emulator ePSXe 1.5.0

System PC - Windows/Linux

PSX emu, heres whats new:
- Fixed a bug in MDECs, which caused Metal Gear Solid and Rayman 1 to
crash. Furthermore, the MDEC options aren't read from the windows
registry any more, so you can only disable them with command lines
from now on.
- Rewritten the code what loaded the ps-exe files when starting a game, for a better detection of the games name and the region.
- Added native support for ppf files. Now you don't need to patch the games any more, simply copy your ppf file into the directory "/patches", with the same name than the main PS-exe file in the cdrom (SLES*,SCES*, SLUS* ...), in uppercase. ePSXe will load it on startup then and patch the game in memory on the fly !
- MCI code is now disabled in WinNT/2k/XP, expect when you are using an external CD-ROM plugin which has its own CDDA functions (e.g. Pete's). Furthermore, the external CD-ROM plugins can now play some games like Tomb Raider I and II PAL, what was not possible before due to a bug in 1.4.0.
- Fixed a bug in the internal CD-ROM plugins, which caused some games to hang when they played CDDA sound and later accessed a data
sector (Rayman 1)
- Fixed some bugs in savestates. New savestate are not compatibles with old epsxe versions, but the savestates from a savestate from an old version can still be loaded. The command line -ssv0 has been added, which will let ePSXe save the savestates into the old (but buggy) format.
(Fixed savestates in square mdecs, and in threads of fate)
- Some games which ran only with a certain bios version, should now run
with any (only checked with Legend of Dragon PAL)
- Fixed some GTE bugs. (Looney Tunes: Perro y Lobo, Nhl 99)
- Included a file with help, what can be accessed from help->contents.
(Thanks to Bobbi of http://www.ngemu.com)
- Last hour changes in internal spu, what fixes Metal gear solid and
Valkyrie profile sound, but we have not had too time for test it ;)
- Added a new workaround in order to run Parasite Eve 2 (thanks to
Psychojak!). You need to use the command "-pe2". Some PE2 versions are
automaticly detected and don't need it though. We didn't play through
the complete game though, we we can't tell if it's playable until the end.
- Fixes to the CD-Rom decoder and the core, which make some more games playable like for example Valkyrie profile, Syphon filter series speech, Rayman 1, Micromachines V3, Croc 2, Duke Nukem: Land of Babes, Vrally 2 and Nfs 5 menus, Time Crisis 2 music, Casper Around the World ...
- Multiples games can be played using additional commands like:
Rebelt Assault 2 (-noignorecmd), Micromaniacs (-cdtiming), Front Mission 3 (-nocdinc) ...
