Let's have even more of geekout. Actually, in the real world, Abydos was a city in Ancient Egypt. Around 4000 BC, there was a significant cult that worshiped Osiris who was lord of the netherworld according to Egyptian mythology. Abydos became the site where the the first kings of a unified Egypt (the first time around it was unified) were buried. Later, the city was a favorite burial spot in general because of it's association with Osiris, and up until the development of Christianity, Egyptians would often have statues of their dead ancestors built even if their bodies were buried elsewhere. So it kind of was the city of the dead.

I'm not going to be insulted if someone corrects me. It's been over a decade since I've had any classes in ancient mythology.
