But to be fair to the Xbox, it's handling of emulation from the 16-bit era is better than the Dreamcast's, and it's media player far surpasses anything our favourite little console could muster.
Although there are still plenty of reasons to hate the thing .

Unai from Chankast has been at the MadriDC party in Spain. He explained the new features that were going to be added, like the debugger that actually has and said very interesting reasons explaining that a future version will run at full speed in a 600-700Mhz pc
Considering that the xbox it's a pc but without a Windows XP eating lots of resources i think that the M$ console can make it run at 100% speed

I'm sure I remember somebody saying that an SH4 at 200MHz is equal to a 800MHz P3 .bender wrote:...a future version will run at full speed in a 600-700Mhz pc

The SH4's FPU capabilities equal or surpass that of a P3 733 processor. Its integer calculations (which is what is needed for emulation) operate near that of a 200Mhz Pentium class chip (definetly MMX maybe even a p2 or something)
I garuntee there is no way this will be true fullspeed on an Xbox ever. By true fullspeed i mean within 99% accuracy of emulation, no frameskip, no underclocking, no Xbox with an OCd 2 Ghz p3, sound turned on and capable of most of its abilities, etc.

well, you're probably right about the xbox. I forgot that xbox CPU it's a Celeron and that the system has only 64Mb ram. Anyway don't think as a pc when talking about the xbox. It's a pc but there's not a big monster like windowze installed in, the full system it's only about 500k, i think
I wasn't at the party, but people say that Unai's explanations about how does chankast work internally and about future Chankast PC requierements were very convincing. He's one of the coders of that tremendous work so i think he probably knows what is he talking about

xbox-celery
The xBox does not use a PentiumIII
The xBox uses an Intel Mobile Celeron CPU.
The xbox uses a low power Celeron designed for laptops.
Mobile Celeron != Desktop Pentium III

I meant smaller yet different than standard socket 370 celerons(or micro-gba 456(?) tualian chips). There is no such Celeron other than that found in the Xbox that has 128kb of L2 cache AND a 133fsb with a tualian(sp?) core. Yes the mobile celeron is the closest thing, but it still isnt what it is.int80h wrote:Yea, thats called a Celeron. It IS a p3 733, but with a smaller amount of L2 cache than standard p3s (iirc)
A Celeron has the same core as the current Pentium chip, but with less cache.

well i've spoken with some of the Chankast devs. First thing to say : they are a very talented bunch of coders so it might be possible to get it running on Xbox.
But the biggest hurdle to overcome would be the dynarec they uses. Its 48 Megs, so you lose 48 megs out of 64 right there without any other mallocs() for the DC system itself.
You could in theory reduce the dynarec size but then you lose performance. We used this approach when porting Surreal64. It works but you get more pauses than normal as the recompiler is generating new instructions.

i second that. the FPU performance of the SH-4 can barely be matched by a standard p3 733, but with 1/4 the cache, i see it as near impossible, especially since ram isnt high speed enough to make up for it.
No box is moving in on the DC's emulation turf
