Actually, SA was my favorite GTA. Despite that, though, I never did get hardly anywhere in any of those games. I would spend hour after hour just driving around not really doing anything and never get to the side missions. I think I put like 30 hours in SA, and never got to the next city.

^exactly. More realism to the game would be nice, such as every building actually being a building that you can go into and interact with. Once a GTA game's story was over it was like "ok, now what do I do with this $50 brick?". Well, let me line up skulls or something.

Not only that, but later on the missions get way too far-fetched.

How the hell does some Average Joe from the hood jump in a Jet and fly it, then para-drop over area51 without any problems?

GTA has never had great graphics, but it has a strong sense of design to compensate.

The whole 'GTA genre' is so played out now though, that they need to do something special to not just be 'another sequel' - it'll sell, noone doubts that, but a lot of people are pinning 'omg best game evar!' hopes on it. I remember when a new Tony Hawks excited me, but now? Not so much.

They can either take the next gen transition to introduce new gameplay elements they couldn't do before (as the aforementioned Saints Row did - online and ragdoll) or they can do 'prettier graphics' and leave the core gameplay alone.

Or a combination of both.

Or something totally unique and potetnially alienate their core audience.

I just hope whatever it is that they do do with the franchise, GTA3 with shiner graphics isn't it.
I see what you mean, but I always figured they would be making this one significantly different from those before it anyway. Simply because they're makring this down as GTA4, so it should be seperate from the three GTA3-style games on the PS2.

The Gamesradar article I quoted (but didn't link to) here
had 7 things from other games that GTA definitely needs to at least add, and probably improve on if it wants to survive into nextgen.

I pretty much agree with all of them as a starting point. But they are going to have to add their own original features too. This is why it may be a system-seller game for me, or may not be.

I definitely agree that nothing but a graphical overhaul won't be enough though.

I think some of the things they ask for are abit too much such as every building being destroyable? I imagine when using system resources it takes a lot more to render a building that can be destroyed then one that can't. So I can only imagine how much of a the system resources would be plugged up if every single building in the city could be destroyed.

I didn't mind being able to go town to town though. I thought it added more realism then simply 1 giant town. However as long as there are still backroads etc I will be happy. Being able to pick up more items and use them as a weapon would be nice (such as deadrising does for example).

Well, we'll see some things in about 4 hours :D

As much as I'd like to see a ton of new elements and a complete redesign, if they did just give us a bigger, prettier game I would probably be happy with it =\.

I can see the argument for 'more realistic', but for a game with such progression, there has to be a couple of extraordinary things that couldn't happen in real life... hence the term 'game'.

To be honest, I believe they're following the old adage.

I'm thinking there will be a big change. That's why it's GTA IV.

Vice City and San Andreas weren't GTA IV and V because the changes in the core gameplay weren't drastic enough. IV is the real deal.

We'll find out what the game is really like in 2 hours though, so why don't I stop speculating.

About to watch it... excitement. :D

[EDIT] Gamespot doesn't seem to work, GameTrailers is OK:

The server is incredibly slow right now... what a surprise.

One of the later Vice City missions had you race whats his face so you had a driver for your heist. First problem was that he took off before you could. Second was his car was far superior in every way to your piece of crap. Third was that he would try to ram you off the road at every chance. The race seemed unnecessary as hes only going to benefit from being your driver as he will of course get a cut.

Then once the heist is over you just leave and I never found out if the game ended there or what as the credits never rolled. Did find out I missed the porn missions and even once finished the credits still didn't roll.

Just seen it all and, kinda dissapointing to be honest.

1) Liberty City AGAIN

2) The city looks beautiful in comparison to GTA3, but its not exactly fantastic

3) Doesnt show any gameplay at all

EDIT: I decided I'm not dissapointed at all. I really want this game.

The city just looks so bleak and cool, and a Russian main character? Yes please!

Oh by the way. The entire trailer is clearly paying tribute to Koyaanisqatsi.
See the trailer here for the similarities:

Just a little bit of culture for you there ;)
