DUH ?? I knew that if I bring the CdRW thing someone said something. I know SVCD plays in a normal Cd, but IS COMPRESSED IN OTHER CODE. Like Mpeg2. It doesnt mean that if I have a Cd-rom & Power DVD software i can watch DVD?s.....cause it needs a special Hardware (lens that can read that kind of Cd)..thats what im saying is the problem with the dreamcast u dumb
SVCDs can be read in any CD-XA compatible CD-ROM drive that runs with at least 2x speed (i.e. any modern CD-ROM drive will do). A Pentium-II 350 MHz level multimedia PC (or equivalent) can possibly decode SVCDs in real time with mere software. Slower machines may require an additional MPEG-2 decoder card
The GD-ROM (GD for "GigaDisk", referring to the capacity of approx. 1 GB) drive is custom made for SEGA by Yamaha. It uses a regular CD-ROM laser (as opposed to a DVD drive which uses a different wavelength), but has the necessary firmware to access data stored in the proprietary GD-ROM format, which packs the bits more densely than on a normal Yellow Book CD.
So the only problem with playing mpeg2 would really be the dreamcast's cpu which is 200mhz, but needs to be 350mhz to play it.
Edit: http://www.divx.com says it needs 450mhz for divx to run, so does that mean that theres still a possibility for mpeg2 on dreamcast?
the 350 mHz is for a Pentium II in a COMPUTER. The Dreamcast is a CONSOLE (no other crap running but the player) with an SH-4 processor. Clock speeds are not always directly comparable across processors...

are you trying to say the dreamcast can't read cds burned as SVCDs? if so, please think before you post. an SVCD can be read in ANY cdrom drive, and since the dreamcast can read cds, it can read SVCDs. duh svcd uses mpeg 2, thats the point! you have to add support for mpeg 2 to make an svcd player
