CrabEmu 0.1.6 Released

This forum is for discussion pertaining to homebrew and indie software for the Dreamcast, such as homebrew games, emulators/interpreters, and other homebrew software/applications. Porting requests and developmental ideas are not to be made here; you can make those here. If you need any help burning discs for homebrew software, this is the place to ask as well.

CrabEmu 0.1.6 Released

Post by BlueCrab »

Well, I missed having a Christmas release this year, so I'll have a New Years one instead. I've released CrabEmu 0.1.6 today supporting both Mac OS X and the Dreamcast. There are plenty of changes in this version from the last version, not the least of which being that it now runs on the Dreamcast.

Anyway, for those wondering, CrabEmu is a Sega Master System, Game Gear, and now SG-1000 emulator. It doesn't run perfectly on the DC yet, and there's no sound, but its a good start for an emulator that I never actually intended to port to the Dreamcast. 8-)

You can get it from http://crabemu.sourceforge.net

Happy New Years to all.

Happy New Year to all, and to celebrate, here is a new release of CrabEmu.

The major changes to this release of CrabEmu are as follows:
* CrabEmu now runs on the Sega Dreamcast as well as Mac OS X.
* Support was added for the TMS 9918 modes of the SMS VDP, as well as for the SG-1000 console.
* Support for the Korean mapper.
* Too many bug fixes to mention.

Anyway, enjoy the release, and be sure to report any bugs you find. Happy New Years to everyone.
How great is that - Thanks a lot for this release :D

That part of the page has to be manually updated. I was in a bit of a hurry releasing it, so I didn't get a chance to do that yet.

EDIT:
Its fixed now.

I made an SBI for the release:
http://dchelp.net/sbi/files/Emus/CrabEmu_v0.1.6_CE.sbi

I also converted the menu PNGs to 256 colors which fixes the display problems on the menu. :)

It's a really nice emulator btw. It has problems with GG games but it does work quite well with SMS games. The support for the Korean mapper is a nice thing. I will post some compatibility reports as soon as I have another chance at playing around with this release.

I really would love to have an update with sound emulation enabled btw....

16-bit (aka 65536 color mode) would be more appropriate. As a side note though, I already have a set of fixed PNGs on my machine here, they will be in the next release.

If you see any issues with it, use the sourceforge.net tracker for CrabEmu to report them, and try to be as specific in how to recreate the bug as possible. Also, make sure to look at the ones that are listed as closed on there too... I've fixed SEVERAL bugs since the last release. Thanks for doing testing, it helps me immensely. Also, if by problems with GG games you mean that it displays the area of the screen that isn't normally visible, that's not really a bug (and in some games it actually helps, like Sonic the Hedgehog 2).

Right now, it actually is emulating the sound (just not doing any output of it). I want to make sure that everything runs full speed before I worry about enabling it. There are still some issues with at least one game (Phantasy Star) that I need to get sorted before I have it output sound. :?

CrabEmu 0.1.7 Released

Post by Dutchdude »

BlueCrab released a new version of CrabEmu about a week ago :)

This release contains far too many bug fixes and code cleanups to mention, but here's a selection of some of the bigger changes:

* Modified sound output to remove branches from the code.
* Fixed a Dreamcast GUI issue where CrabEmu would crash after loading about 7 roms.
* Made the Dreamcast port only show the portion of the screen that would actually be visible on the Game Gear.
* Added a mapper detection function for certain games to detect use of special mappers by the two checksums on the
rom.
* Enabled sound output on the Dreamcast port.
* Added support for the EEPROM used in certain Game Gear baseball games.
* Added support for the extra RAM in the Ernie Els Golf cartridge.
* Added support for the extra RAM in the SG-1000 game The Castle.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I haven't tried it myself but I will next week.

Thanx BlueCrab 8-)
