Recomendations for my dusty DC?

This forum is for discussion pertaining to homebrew and indie software for the Dreamcast, such as homebrew games, emulators/interpreters, and other homebrew software/applications. Porting requests and developmental ideas are not to be made here; you can make those here. If you need any help burning discs for homebrew software, this is the place to ask as well.

Recomendations for my dusty DC?

Post by Polymira »

Just moved, was unpacking the consoles and found my old dusty DreamCast....

It's been at least a few years since I've mucked around with DC homebrew (xbox, psp, ds, and gp2x took up that part of my life for a while).

So sceners, any emulator/homebrew apps or game recommendation for someone who was around when the DC scene started?

I would point you to DCEvolution, but our site is offline due to an attack by hackers. Anyway, here's my round-up on some of the most interesting releases during the past few years:

- Hope you got "DownThemAll" installed, you will need it....

In news of non-Japanese commercial scene releases, we saw releases of Last Hope (a NeoGeo shmup) and Cool Herders:
http://www.lasthope.ngdevteam.com/
http://www.harmlesslion.com/
Both are at least as good as Maqiupai, Inhabitants and Feet of Fury; for which DCEvolution released a compilation of all the long lost Feet of Fury swap discs: http://dcevolution.net/downloads/hosted ... p_4in1.rar

Here's an exclusive demo of the commercial version of Cool Herders:
http://www.harmlesslion.com/zips/CoolHerders_DJ.zip

...which brings us to the freeware stuff:

In 2005, Patbier and Poche released demo v3 of Alice Dreams and announced Dynamite Dreams for this year:
http://www.dreamcast-scene.com/index.ph ... liceDreams
http://www.alicedreams.com/aliced3.zip
http://www.alicedreams.com/NewsANG.htm

Handmade Videogames released a demo of a fantastic homebrew shmup called Drill in 2005:

http://www.drill.rr.nu/index.htm
http://www.drill.rr.nu/includes/downloa ... -promo.avi

After three years of development, Phantom and MrSiggler released DreamChess for DC:

MetaFox abandoned his DreamOn project and left the scene in 2006 but DCEvolution hosts the CD that was going to be included to the magazine, featuring 17 of the most impressive homebrew games for Dreamcast:
http://dcevolution.net/downloads/collection/Sandman.rar

Dreamcast-Scene released Scenedicate #1, a disk mag for DC back in late 2005:
http://dcevolution.net/downloads/hosted ... cate01.zip
http://www.dreamcast-scene.com/index.ph ... cenedicate

Featured on Scenedicate #1 is dcplaya 2.0, the best media player for Dreamcast:
http://www.dreamcast-scene.com/index.php/Main/dcplaya
http://mesh.dl.sourceforge.net/sourcefo ... -files.zip

Taxman released a Dreamcast port of the excellent RetroSonic game engine in 2006:
http://dcevolution.net/downloads/hosted ... -Demo1.rar
http://www.dreamcast-scene.com/index.ph ... RetroSonic
http://rsonic.randomsonicnet.org/index.html

Sonic Robo Blast 2 based on the Doom Legacy engine got ported to Dreamcast:
http://www.dreamcast-scene.com/index.ph ... RoboBlast2
http://dcevolution.net/downloads/hosted/Srb2dc.rar

bucanero and speud released awesome compilations of VMU saves and games, the VMU Backup CD and DreamExplorer:
ttp://bswirl.kitsunet.org/vmutool/release/about/?lg=&menu=
http://bswirl.kitsunet.org/vmutool/rele ... eud_DJ.rar

http://heanet.dl.sourceforge.net/source ... dition.rar
http://dcevolution.net/downloads/hosted/VMUCD.rar
http://www.dreamcast-scene.com/index.php/Main/VMUBackup

OneThirty8 released a fresh port of Wolfenstein 3d:
http://dcevolution.net/downloads/hosted ... reware.rar
viewtopic.php?f=45&t=54046

The Beats of Rage / OpenBoR scene released two of their best mods, Battletoads by bwwd and Final Fight: The Last Round by Mr.Q:
http://dcevolution.net/downloads/bordce ... sDCEvo.rar
http://dcevolution.net/downloads/bordcevo/FFLR.rar

SCUMMVM developed quite a bit during the past years and DCDayDreamer compiled these CDIs with FOTAQ and BASS for DCEvolution:
http://dcevolution.net/downloads/completegame/Fotaq.rar
http://dcevolution.net/downloads/completegame/Bass.rar

He also made Dreamcast eBooks using the DCTonic menu:
http://dcevolution.net/downloads/dceboo ... eebook.zip
http://dcevolution.net/downloads/dcebooks/Halloween.rar

...and a complete compilation of bunerO's Dreamcast works:
http://dcevolution.net/downloads/comple ... nBonus.zip

fackue compiled the DC Dev ISO R3 and Code::Blocks - DC Dev R1
viewtopic.php?f=29&t=88526
http://dcevolution.net/downloads/hosted/DDEr3.rar
viewtopic.php?f=29&t=94665
http://dchelp.dcemulation.org/downloads ... Dev_R1.exe

Fragger prepared a final release of JoyMenu and compiled a QuakeDC compilation with us at DCEvo, featuring all his improvements to QuakeDC on one disc:
http://dcevolution.net/downloads/fps/QuakeDCEvo.rar
http://www.dreamcast-scene.com/index.php/Main/QuakeDC

His new project is nxMakaqu, a fresh Quake port based on BlackAura's nxQuake:
http://www.dreamcast-scene.com/index.php/Main/nxMakaqu
viewtopic.php?f=15&t=73662

I've released initial versions of my DEP compilation series of which I hope to do more in the future:
http://dcevolution.net/downloads/emulat ... EP_v11.rar
http://dcevolution.net/downloads/emulation/S8DEPv1b.zip
- The later features the excellent SMSplusDC by Pascal Bosquet and Heliophpobe.

In late 2005, Scherzo released NesterDC SE, an impressive update to Takayama Fumihiko's last release. If you don't use all features and stick with a smaller selection of your favorite games, this emulator will provide you with an excellent NES experience:
http://www.dreamcast-scene.com/index.ph ... NesterDCSE
http://www.sch3rz0.com/nesterdcse/
http://www.sch3rz0.com/nesterdcse/downl ... -12-10.zip

In 2006, BlackAura and Warmtoe released GenesisPlusDC. The emulator runs full speed with decent compatibility and VMU saving:
http://www.dreamcast-scene.com/index.ph ... esisPlusDC

In other emulation news, Chui and Fox68k released many excellent M68k based emulators; the probably most notable one being Neo4All/CD, a great full speed NeoGeoCD emulator:
http://www.dreamcast-scene.com/index.ph ... Neo4All-CD

- Problem is that DCEmu UK seems to be offline atm, so there's no way to download Chui's (nor GPF's) releases.

Having said that, I have to add that the scene's websites overall are in an absolutely terrible state. Except for DCEmulation, which only hosts stuff from 2002, it's mostly because of hackers and spambots though.
Insane homebrew collector.

Heh! Would you believe that I totally forgot about that? Having said that, I may need to take a day off from my current project one day soon to play it.

What a coincidence, you and burnerO suddenly appear out of nowhere in the same week after having disappeared for quite a while. :)
It's thinking...

Christuserloeser - Dude, you rock. I don't think I was expecting a huge comprehensive list like that, but I do appreciate it.

Nice to see the community still going strong as hell.

Christuserloeser, What you said about a lot of the DC Scene Websites being:
having said that, I have to add that the scene's websites overall are in an absolutely terrible state
As a web/ graphic designer I would be willing to do something about that.

However it would need to be supported by others to pay for domain costs. As this is something for hosting a large database of files that I would not be able to afford on my own.

I would however design it, and build it in php, as well as having a forum. It would however be strictly for emulation and homebrew purposes only.

Let me know what you think.
