Golden Axe Remake DC

This forum is for discussion pertaining to homebrew and indie software for the Dreamcast, such as homebrew games, emulators/interpreters, and other homebrew software/applications. Porting requests and developmental ideas are not to be made here; you can make those here. If you need any help burning discs for homebrew software, this is the place to ask as well.

Golden Axe Remake DC

Post by Christuserloeser »

I've uploaded a fully tested and working Dreamcast version of Golden Axe Remake to DCEvolution.net:

Image
It's a full remake and enhanced version of the arcade game - Golden Axe.

ImageImageImageImageImageImage

This game was initially made for Windows by Chinese OpenBoR coder utunnels. I worked on RAM related optimizations for the Dreamcast version and also recorded the music modes.

utunnels helped a great deal with the Dreamcast port. He vastly optimized the script language in OpenBoR and did many other engine related code optimizations to allow the game to run on the Dreamcast's 200Mhz CPU and 16Mbyte RAM. (In the future we will use the DC's 8Mbyte Video RAM and 2 Mbyte Sound RAM too 8) )

-DOWNLOAD HERE-

Enjoy! :)

I really don't know what's going on: I am trying to get the thing uploaded since the end of last week, but it seems every version I upload comes back broken... :(

Also, Netfirms has been a great host for us in the past but as you noticed the upload/download speed is incredibly slow since quite a while... :?

Thanks, it seems I got it working though. The problem was FireFTP it seems. I uploaded using Windows Explorer and it seems it worked as the file size finally is correct now. - So, please download again using above link. The file you receive should be 163.99 MB (171,961,060 Bytes) big.

Sorry for the inconvenience everyone. :|

I really wish Sega released the arcade version of Golden Axe 2 on a console.

It's a game. You play it on your Dreamcast. As far as I can tell, the point is to entertain.

Yeah, the point is that this release enables you to play an accurate but visually enhanced port of the arcade version of Golden Axe with the remastered soundtracks from the following Golden Axe ports:

- the Arcade original
- Sega Ages remake for PS2
- the Mega Drive (Genesis), recorded from real hardware
- Sega CD
- PCEngine (TurboGrfx16) CD
- Metal MAME project: Metal Axe by Mega Driver
- C64
- Adlib version for MS-DOS PCs
- Wonderswan

One of the next versions will also feature widescreen support, 3-players-at-once, and CPU controlled players.

This is fantastic...

The first and only arcade game I beat in the arcades. It didn't take to long either. What a fun day...

I'm looking forward to the complete mod with all bonuses and features included.

While this is the entire arcade game (with all characters, stages and animations :) ), the game itself and the Dreamcast port are still being enhanced and optimized as the engine progresses; so yeah, there might be a few updates to this release in the future - and stuff like widescreen support, 3 player support and CPU controlled characters definitely are among them.

I don't know how much time the creaters of this are willing to spend on the game. Have they considered adding extras not original to the game. Easter egg items for replay value. Unlockable items and levels. An alternate story line or extra story line as a bonus. Add in a manual or in game storyline. I.E. I play R.E. Umbrella Chronicles and enjoy finding the extra plot lines in documents collected. Basic extras that make these more interesting to the gamer to find and enjoy.

Edit here: Just to make note. I am running into a bug on this beta. I do not know if it is a slip on a button or D pad or what. At random locations the credits for the various ports of this game will show and then fade to a black screen. No more actions will work then. So I restart the game. So hopefully this bug gets resolved. It's an amazing mod.

Edit again: It must be triggered by use of two players. This bug does not seem to occur when one player is playing.

Edit again: After playing through one play past the bird near the castle. I got killed by the double red knights on one player with my final credit. I hit the blue screen of death. A fatal exception error in Microsoft Windows at so and so address blah blah blah. After that screen appeared than the high score screen appeared and entered my high score. I restarted a new game and the controls froze up and so the game froze up. Just another error, "bug" I do hope gets fixed. F.Y.I.

I think I can fix this bug and upload a new version tomorrow. utunnels mentioned it a while back:

utunnels wrote:Hmm, bad news, i jsut found a bug when I remove chargeattack animation. lol
So when you use Ax Battler and do a riseattack then press attack button at the end of the animation the game will shutdown.

The "Fatal Exception" thing is a joke. - However, the game freezing is a bug with the Automatic memory clean up mode in the Dreamcast port of OpenBoR. It happens after all levels have been loaded (either you've beat the game or you've died in last stage). The stages are not completely deleted from RAM (like they should), so when starting a new game it freezes.

To avoid it, just restart your Dreamcast before playing again.

There's nothing I can do, but I am sure this problem will be fixed soon, either by utunnels or SumolX.

Well, I wasn't aware of the bugs prior to releasing it.

Exception is the game hanging after you've beaten it; but I can't fix that myself and I don't know when it will be fixed.

I've been working on the Dreamcast adaption for about two weeks, and recorded and collected the music during at least half a year. - I guess I really wanted to finally see this beast out there.

Anyway; I will upload a version tomorrow which fixes the three bugs I am now aware of and are capable of fixing:
* game crashing because of Ax Battler's rise attack
* thief.bor falsely named "thief1.bor" in Arcade mode
* light source and panel height in castle stage

With the game hanging after beating it we have to live until either utunnels or SumolX take care of it.
