Hrmm... I was thinking of building one of those, primarily because I wanted a nice video card... I really couldn't care less about having a tower...... how much did that set you back, and was it a lot of work?

Re: -=[Post your desktop thread]=-
It wasn't more expensive than your regular midrange PC...
It was part chance, part plan. I wanted a Core 2 Duo system, and maybe I'd dabble in osx86, but it wasn't a deal-breaker.
I got a budget motherboard, an Asrock Conroe1333-D667 (Asrock is Asus's budget brand), that just happened to be FULLY compatible with OS X. It just needed to be flashed to BIOS version 1.0. It has an Intel 945G chipset, which seems to be one of the best choices for OS X. Audio works fine, you need to fiddle a bit to get the audio line-in working, but it's doable. Ethernet, the one weakness of many boards when it comes to osx86, works perfectly without any modifications or configuration. It's a Realtek RTL8139. Integrated video works fine too. The motherboard cost about $60.
Then I bought an E4500 Core 2 Duo CPU, a midrange processor, clocked at 2.2 Ghz. The Asrock motherboard doesn't allow overclocking at all, but osx86 doesn't like overclocking, so it's not big deal. It cost about $130.
The video card, a 7600GS, is one i already had. It just needs some configuration in osx86 to be detected, and you get FULL Quartz, Quartz 2D and Quartz Extreme support. Take that, cheesy Geforce 7300 on the Mac Pro! As you can see, a 1080p HD movie plays silky-smooth, with a ton of stuff open.
This modest system easily beats a G5, and is on par with the current iMacs.
Installing osx86 involves a bit of work, if you're using your official Tiger install disc, as we all should do... . You could of course, use less... "conventional" methods, if you get my drift... It's up to you...
Give it a try, it really works. Don't mess with Leopard yet, just go for Tiger. you'll find a ton of useful info on the osx86 site.

Wow, I did not realize we had so many OSX users here. ah well, here is my Lappy! I am still using Gutsy as I ran into problems with Hardy. But so far the Alpha of 8.10 seems to have fixed those problems, so I am very much looking forward to it.
