Where Am I now?
BACK IN THE DREAM-ALIVE DAYZ I ONLY TYPED IN CAPS, AND BOUGHT A LOTTA SEGA STUFF...
Well those days are over, I do not even play video games that much even, but in the crazy days I bought a brand new Sega 32x which I never got working even, with a bunch of games (Star Wars, Doom, Space Harrier) and a bunch of Sega-CD games (I don't even own a Sega-CD)... After staying years in boxes, I finally got around to cleaning and pimping my collection out. I arranged all the Saturn and Dreamcast games properly and then looked at the remaining CD, 32x games still in there boxes never even played or tested and I thought to my self am I doing justice to these products.
At one point I really wanted a 32x, CD, Genesis all connected to the TV but I never got around to that, I even have around 20 Genesis games in boxes not played or tested, and I am wondering what should I do...
I will be starting Bachelors in Science (Psychology) soon and the little time I spend on games will decrease as well, I still have to focus on completing my Dreamcast collection (all 248 US games, the exclusive pal titles and selected Japanese games)...
I can basically go on and on but any collector on the board would know what I am going through and I just want to know what do I do...

Re: Where Am I now?
Gone are the days of lending out my Earthbound and Super Mario RPG's to friends who never returned them. Gone are the days of walking into the normal game store/super mart and STILL seeing used Super/NES/Genesis games in cheap plastic bags. Long has it been since I dreamed of owning a Sega Nomad or Redant GameAxe, rare commodities never readily available in my city. I used to burn all my games. I had Final Fantasy 8 (JPN) before anyone was even done playing Final Fantasy 7.
I rarely bust out the Dreamcast, my Playstation and Xbox were sold for car parts. My GBA lies dormant, not having been used in 3 or more years. I am merely a part time collector, buying up old memories for low prices, in a vein attempt to sell them higher in the years to come.
Last time I played Quake was 4 months ago. It saddens me to remember the fun times I can never re-live playing Rocket Arena, Team Fortress, Cop's and Robber's, and Deathmatch on Heat.net with all my friends.
I miss playing the original Counter Strike in maps such as Facility, Siege, Mansion, Docks, back when it catered to a more mature audience, it was new, and they didn't screw it up (beta 2-beta 4).
I miss going down to the now defunct A1 Games store, and having LAN matches in Doom, Carmaggedon, Star Wars, and Duke Nukem 3d.
Those days are gone. While it depresses me, they have been replaced with the bar scene, casual sex with women, fast cars, and high times.

I just can't bring myself to sell my child hood off just yet. It doesn't take up much space and has plenty of sentimental value to me. I have sold off my high priced collectibles because I need the money and I don't give a damn about collecting anymore.
A few fries short of a happy meal.

I cant do it either. However it was all torn away from me. My brother took our nes to college and it apparently broke and was thrown away along with 30+ games, my mother sold my snes while I was away for the weekend because it was taking up too much room , my 3 year old brother somehow managed to get a giant old tv to fall out of its cabinent and onto my n64, and the screen on my original gameboy died years ago.APE wrote:I just can't bring myself to sell my child hood off just yet. Emulation has somewhat brought back my childhood, but its just not the same. Im still really pissed off my mom sold my snes while I was gone, what makes it worse is she didnt even give me any of the money.

Re: Where Am I now?
I've made the switch from "hardcore" to "casual" gamer. A few years ago gaming was my life. These days I hardly touch a console from September-May because 80% of my time is on University, the other 20% is spent doing things I'd rather do than gaming, like socialising mainly.
When I am playing games I have no clue about most of the nextgen stuff, especially new IP. I just follow a handful of my favourite franchises. I don't have the time or money to burn on trying out new stuff. This summer I had lots of free time so have been playing games quite a bit: Final Fantasy 8,10, 10-2 and 12. 4 games all from the same franchise that I've already beaten before.
As for my Dreamcast...I have no clue where it is. The 2 main draws were emulation (which I dont have time for, and can now do better on other consoles if I want), and my raging Shenmue fanboyism (which has now died down due to years of no continuation, and I've played games better than it).
These days my free time and money is mainly: chilling on the net (on places like this, and socialising with old friends), going to the pub/gigs, and watching movies because they only kill an hour or 2 then they're done.

Re: Where Am I now?
I found that I still get that great desire for games if I space out the games that I want to play. I used to jump at the opportunity to own every great blockbuster game that came along, only to find myself not playing half of them. So instead, I buy only one new game every two or three or so months, that way my excitement for games is a lot higher and there's a good chance I will actually play it to the end. Now granted I will buy a lot of cheap games along the way, but a few dollars here and there is much better than trying to keep up with every great new game that comes along.
What I have learned along the years is to stick with a game I want to play. Jumping around from game to game will mean I will never finish any of them and have no desire to play anything. By limiting myself to playing two games at a time and not allowing myself to play a new game until I beat one, I get wrapped up into the game, have the desire to finish it, and fight that new game buying desire. Also, by doing this, I find myself escaping to any console and not be either stuck in the past or wrapped up in the future. What am I playing right now? Super Mario RPG (with the original cartridge no less) and Sim City DS.
It's not about letting your hobby of gaming die, it's about finding that right balance that keeps that excitement of games going. I get the same excitement over a game today that I got when I was a kid. Buying Twilight Princess made me just as excited as when I got Sonic 3 for my birthday 12 years ago. It just takes a change to your gaming lifestyle.

Re: Where Am I now?
I'm still enjoying video games between work, school, drinking, partying and other debaucherous activities. I haven't sold many of my old systems. The only ones I betrayed were my GBC and GBA, simply because I didn't have any connection with either. I might still be a galatically huge nerd, but my friends wouldn't have me any other way.
I was at the point years ago when I was burned out. But once I laid back on playing my classic favorites daily, bought only the best new games, I found a happy medium. Like melancholy said, there are still releases that make me giddy. I can't wait for BioShock, Super Mario Galaxies and the other Nintendo releases on the Wii and DS. I'm playing Madden 08 a lot like I used to with Mutant League Football or Quarterback Club. The difference now? After I'm done, I go downtown/a kegger and get shit housed.

Re: Where Am I now?
For starters I am astonished how well all of us are relating, we are know longer those kids (describe yourself how you like).
----
As for the stuff I have lying around I am still unable to reach a conclusion, should I sell it off or gear up as a collector and get back in the race (least likely to happen for consoles prior to the saturn.)
On a side note I don't know if I would sell it, I would consider giving it for free to someone who would recognize how priceless they are.
Makes a lot of sense. I also belive in finishing the games rather then bouncing through them, currently playing Shinobi (PS2) and Resident Evil Deadly Silence, I plan on playing them till the end before moving to Resident Evil 2 (or 0/Remake), if I find the balance iI may be as happy as you .melancholy wrote: What I have learned along the years is to stick with a game I want to play. I'd take them off your hands. I still have my 32x and Sega CD, which get used every now and then (actually the 32x get used quite a lot, its my favourite port of Doom!).BILAL_XIA wrote:For starters I am astonished how well all of us are relating, we are know longer those kids (describe yourself how you like).

Re: Where Am I now?
I can see that side of things. Maybe Luriden is different, but for me, sentimental and personal value outweights functional value. I know a mass-produced console isn't anything too magnificent, but these things represent a lot of childhood memories and it's just a shame to get rid of them.BILAL_XIA wrote:Don't you feel it is injustice to the merchandise you own then?
There's also a heavy aspect of laziness. If I don't need the space and I don't need the money, there's very little chance of me taking the time to clear out anything. I'm sure I could go through my attic and find loads of stuff to chuck out or sell, but unless there's a reason for me to get that space back, I'm just not going to do it.
Re: Where Am I now?
That's pretty much me to a T. I never really bought ALL the Blockbuster games, but I used to buy quite a bit more than now. I generally just buy the games I'm really interested in, or in franchises I like a lot. Other than the cheapies (like Scurge: Hive and Gunstar Super Heroes, both $4 and purchases a few days ago), I only buy 4 or 5 console games a year I'd guess. Console I seem to play the most now is my DS, since I can just play it for like an hour before bed or before work/school without any special prep or anything.melancholy wrote:I found that I still get that great desire for games if I space out the games that I want to play. For me though, it's completely cyclical. I won't play games for months, then I'll have a few weeks where I play quite a bit. In that other time, I'll take up my other hobbies/interests again... Import movies, domestic films, airsoft, novels, history books, hanging out with friends, etc.

Injustice? They're game systems, not children. I keep them for sentimental value, but if I have an urge to play a game it's much easier to play a rom than dig my system out and find all the cords for it and hook it up.BILAL_XIA wrote:Don't you feel it is injustice to the merchandise you own then?

Despite working all the time and not having any time to enjoy them, I still have most of the consoles/games that I grew up gaming with. I COULD NEVER LET THEM GO. I WISH I STILL HAD MY VAST COLLECTION OF TURBODUP STUFF THAT i stupidily sold several years ago.

Re: Where Am I now?
I never really bought the CD, 32x or Saturn when I was growing up, so after the dreamcast march 01 announcment I decided to change that.
The Saturn was what I bought, haven't got the good games for it yet but it's pretty easy to set up so I will play it and when I bought I enjoyed it a lot with MK2 & SF The Movie.
32x never got it to connect properly.
CD bought games not the system.
Now that I realise that I have no child hood attachment to them and due to them beeing quite lousy it's safe to get rid of them although if only I bought it in the heyday and played Eternal Champions and Sonic CD on it, life would've been more fun.

Re: Where Am I now?
Wow, don't know how I missed this one.
I am exactly the same as mel, but I still do not have that "technique" down pat. As a result, I have a pile of 360 games to play and not enough time to finish them all. My problem is, that while I only play one or two games at a time (usually two if I get frustrated with one I play the other for a bit then go back to the first one), I get every game that looks promising. I need to look into things more before I get them to be sure that I enjoy them. The few times I have had that technique right though (lmfao, I just spelled it "wright", I need to play phoenix wright 3 but have to finish some 360 games first, gah >_>), the burning passion has become alive again and the days have returned where I get up extra early in the morning to squeeze in that half an hour or hour of gaming before work and then playing after dinner when I get home until the late hours of the evening.
