Re: Killer sweet DS mod!
The hardest part was taking it apart and putting it together. My gf did the dremeling for me since my hand is really shaky when doing small things like this.
All in all, took about 5 hours and a semi-heart attack when it didn't work the first time I put it back together. (The ribbon cables in the system are hard to put back in =\ )

Re: Killer sweet DS mod!
white primer, then some spray called white satin, then a few coats of gloss.
The blue "splash" is just a color scheme I made in photoshop then printed on paper. There's also a clear plastic sheet on top of the paper, so it all feels like plastic.
All in all, I'm quite happy with the way it turned out, but I think I used a little too much paint. It feels painted and I'm not sure if it will chip. I just hope the enamel gloss is acts as a clear tough coating.

Ended up doing a variation of what I did to my dreamcast, in which I stole the idea from someone else's dreamcast - lol

I forgot you had the old school DS for some reason. In any event, it looks awesome. How ever did you manage to get your hands on a Tri-wing screwdriver?

Actually, Nintendo didn't invent the tri-wing screw, and tri-wing screwdrivers are fairly common. I have a screwdriver with aboout 20 replaceable bits, and it has at least 3 or 4 different sizes of tri-wing bits. The set only cost about $10 or so.

My bad. Now that I think about it, I remember hearing Nintendo invented the Gambit screw (SNES,N64,GC). At least that's what I was informed. In any event, I'm sure one day Nintendo will opt for circle screws in all their consoles. *Shakes fist*

Re: Killer sweet DS mod!
I seriously doubt it. Other game companies (Sega, NEC/Hudson) started using the same screws later, and there are variations of it that I've never heard of Nintendo using (e.g. there's a "negative" version of the same shape that is similar to a Torx screw). They were probably created by a Japanese screw manufacturing company.DanteJay wrote:My bad. Now that I think about it, I remember hearing Nintendo invented the Gambit screw (SNES,N64,GC). You can get a tri-wing on eBay for $6 shipped quite easily.

Re: Killer sweet DS mod!
That's actually where I got mine from, under $10 shipped. =) I'm not sure about the Gamebit, I was only told this. But the name does seem like a game company made it. I don't know where I heard that from, though it was probably in an issue of EGM. If I find concrete evidence, I'll let you know.

Re: Killer sweet DS mod!
Hah...that reminds me of when I was a little kid. When I was in elementary school, I used to love taking things apart and putting them back together to figure out how they worked. Most things were fine when I was done, but I did wreck a microcassette recorder my grandfather gave me. I also had a Ghostbusters LCD game that didn't work when I put it back together...I thought I'd broken it, but a couple years later I took it apart again and discovered I'd just reconnected the LCD wrong.Hawke wrote:All in all, took about 5 hours and a semi-heart attack when it didn't work the first time I put it back together.
