Damn Digital Cameras!
Hey, guys. I recently purchased an 8.1 Megapixel Samsung digital camera, and it's great, but when I record a video it's randomly out of sync. I mean, some videos are spot on, but others are WAAAY out of sync. The lag stays the same throughout the entirety of the recording and doesn't get worse as it goes along, but it's still there...most of the time. Is there a free program I can download that will allow me to adjust the audio/video sync-age? I tried Virtual Dub, but it only seems to fix drawn out lag. What am I supposed to do? Please help.

Nevermind. I'm sorry that I bothered. I'll just shell out another $250 for a new camera. Dammit.

Can you take it back and tell them it doesn't work properly? Get them to replace it or give your money back?

Re: Damn Digital Cameras!
The problem isn't that a solution exists. The problem is that the solution is much more complicated than pressing the button of one program.
If you really want to fix the problem, I'd probably get Virtual Dub and Audacity, two free programs. Calculate exactly how much of a lag there is in the audio. Then strip the audio out with Virtual Dub, put it in Audacity, and delete off the amount of time you figured out for the lag off the beginning of the sound file. Save that and put it back into Virtual Dub and merge the two together again.
You do something like that. It's been many, many years since I had to fix audio, so don't ask me for specifics.

Re: Damn Digital Cameras!
I know for OS X there is a program called Mpeg StreamClip that was created for this exact purpose.
The problem isn't your digital camera, but rather the video capabilities inside of it. Still cameras tack on video capabilities just to sell cameras, even though they really arent very good to use at all. They use old Mpeg1/2 formats which give sync problems when transferred to a computer. Video camcorders are horrendous at taking still pictures, just as still picture cameras are horrendous at taking video.
Sad, but true.

MY camera does that also, however mine is a POS also. Got it in one of those rebate deals for practically nothing.

Re: Damn Digital Cameras!
Thanks for the info, guys. I'm just glad that I'm not talking to myself anymore, lol. Well, I don't want a camcorder because pictures are what I do, but is there ANY known digital camera that (horrendous or not) can deliver video in a STABLE fashion? I just want half-way decent and most of all in sync video from one. I hope that isn't too much to ask from the big boys who crap out these little suckers. heh. All I really record video for is youtube. Search for "Death of a Gamer". I'm not in it, but I was the camera guy, lol. Too bad the video was out of sync half of the time.

Re: Damn Digital Cameras!
I'm sure Canons would have decent video. Canon is pretty much the brand to look for when buying digital cameras.

Any Sony camera is also very reliable. Been having mine for about 4 years now with no problems.

I've heard mixed reviews about the lower end Sony cameras, but the higher end ones (like my H2) are really nice.Jeeba Jabba wrote:Any Sony camera is also very reliable. Been having mine for about 4 years now with no problems.

Re: Damn Digital Cameras!
The Canon Powershot series are great cameras. They take great pictures, and the video is awesome too. It uses an MJPEG codec, which takes up a lot of space compared to the MPEG compression of other still cameras that take video, but if you have a halfway decently sized card, you should be ok. You can get about 32 minutes of video on a 4gb card.

Well, on my Samsung I can get over five hours of video depending on the quality settings on a ONE GB card.

Re: Damn Digital Cameras!
Again I reiterate:
Video cameras suck at still pictures.
Still cameras suck at video.
Seriously take it or leave it.
