I like Caleb. A passionate Dreamcast guy ! And a fine fisherman. And he's got a point in my opinion. If you've owned a Dreamcast the Wii doesn't seem that revolutionary a concept.

Jeez, I've never used a Wii, but I sure hope the controls in Wii games are better than Soul Calibur with a fishing rod. That's certainly fun for a while with two people, but the game is really not...playable that way.

Now, with a keyboard...

Someone was kicking around the idea of a fishing rod-controlled action game a couple of years ago. I don't remember who, and I don't think the project got much past the conceptual "this would be neat" stage.

But it would still be neat.

The italics clearly show he is being sarcastic.

I am glad that everyone here gets the fact that the video wasn't 100% serious and it was about having fun with the Dreamcast which is still a great system.

I have gotten some emails that suggested that other people might not have gotten it.

Anyways you can play fully with the fishing rod. I actually did a lot better when the camera was off. I was pulling off throws and stuff.

This should be an event in the Dreamcast Summer Games...hmm...

Yeah, I think more homebrew needs to take advantage of the Dreamcast's different control option. A couple years ago, I was starting to get into development on the Dreamcast and I had an idea all worked up that would have used the lightgun and mic together in a sort of abstract puzzle game, but I never actually started writing it. I'm doing homebrew on the DS these days, though, and actually the same idea could work on the DS using the touchscreen and mic, so maybe one day I'll return to that idea.

It was probably GyroVorbis' "Samba de Amigo"-esque game, using fishing rods in place of the maracas. IIRC the name is Viva La Samba.

I couldn't agree more about the lack of Homebrew using these peripherals. Sounds like you would now dev it for the DS but there's a possibility of concurrently doing a Dreamcast version? Whatever, the game idea you have sounds promising-go for it !.

A downside to the concept, especially on Dreamcast, would be the amount of Dreamcast owners who have both the gun and microphone, Maraccas, Fishing controller, Dancemat etc. It would be an extremely niche market ?

The two peripherals which have been totally underused by all developers, homebrew or otherwise, are the Rumble Pack and VMU. Only two games used the Rumble Pack creatively on the Dreamcast. Skies Of Arcadia had the rumble as a means of locating items by feeling the strength of the rumble go from faint to strong. It was a nice little touch to the gameplay and alongside the VMU Pinta Quest, the best use of the VMU in any game on DC, the feature added hugely to the game's appeal. Resident Evil:Code Veronica had the Rumble Pack mimic the player's heart beat. If you have the MadCatz Rumble Pack there was also a red flash for each hearbeat-a simple but very effective, and scary !, feature.

The great thing about using the Rumble and VMU creatively, rather than as a functional tool, in homebrew is the amount of players who own both devices. Most players have both allowing a wider market for the game.

I think it seems a little out of the scope of what GyroVorbis could do alone.
It's thinking...
