New OpenBoR ModLoader SBIs for SBInducer v4

This forum is for discussion pertaining to homebrew and indie software for the Dreamcast, such as homebrew games, emulators/interpreters, and other homebrew software/applications. Porting requests and developmental ideas are not to be made here; you can make those here. If you need any help burning discs for homebrew software, this is the place to ask as well.

New OpenBoR ModLoader SBIs for SBInducer v4

Post by Christuserloeser »

Since there has been a new release of OpenBoR, I updated the SBIs at DCHelp.net's SBI Repository to v2.0691:

Download the Multinorm Version (Works on all machines and allows to switch between NTSC/PAL)
Download the NTSC Version (Works on all machines)
Download the PAL Version (Recommend for EU, AU, BR, AR, UR, and other PAL machines)

Burn with SBInducer v4.

Short excerpt of relevant features since 2006:
- PAK File Selector
- Full 4 player support
- Highly optimized and reduced memory usage
- Much improved performance (stable framerate)
- 100% compatible with all previous OpenBoR/DarkBoR versions

Download your mods at http://www.lavalit.com/ (You need to register to download)

Don't you know that Arizona uses a different standard from the rest of the US? ;-)

Yeah, it's probably Arrentina.

Why is it recommended for PAL machines? Does it display at 50 Hz?

I got no idea. I was checking where PAL is used and noticed that Argentinia was one of those countries. El Bucanero is from Argentina.

Uruguay is another country using the PAL norm ? I should have written SA for South-America instead, but there are countries that don't use PAL, like Chile.

Anyway, back on topic: there is a problem with the latest version of OpenBoR, so I'll take down the download until it's been solved. SamuraiX is currently looking into it.

PAL is used for television, but we usually get american consoles because there's very little to no official distribution (and even when there was, they brought NTSC systems).
AFAIK Brazil was the only South American country to get an actual Dreamcast release supported by TecToy; and I think those where just american hardware and *a limited selection of* american software with translated boxes and manuals.

Chris, you didn't answer whether the PAL version of this ModLoader runs at 50 Hz. I asked this because the PAL-M system used in Brazil works at 60 Hz, and the TVs around here can't display at 50 Hz.

I've heard rumors that the DCs sold by Tec Toy doesn't boot any CDs, and that its BIOS was translated into Portuguese, but since I never used a Brazilian DC I can't confirm this.

afaik, brazil and argentina get set aside because they both use slight variations of PAL http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PAL#PAL-M_ ... 8Brazil.29

I am not sure. I would assume L@Cible's original PAL version runs at 50Hz, but I can't really verify that. The advantage of the PAL version is the resolution: It looks much 'smoother' as the NTSC version and there isn't any part of the screen missing on my TV.

Best you can do is to download any of the BoR images we host at DCEvolution.net and compare the performance of the included PAL and NTSC versions.

Anyway, in the latest build SamuraiX gave me for beta testing, he was working on allowing different video modes to be set in the video options (instead of distributing seperated binaries) and planned on porting OpenBoR to KOS to allow even widescreen display.

our dreamcasts run mil-cds and all of them boot
dcemulation homebrews perfectly.
the dreamcast swirl is blue and the bios is a normal one
without any translations to portuguese.

even we use 120v - 60hz - pal-m, the brazilian dreamcast
is based in the european one, to avoid piracy.

so thats a lot of games boot with big black bar in the top of
the screen.

This big black bar may be caused by games displaying at 50 Hz. Any specific examples?

I think the black bars are because of the different screen resolutions of PAL and NTSC TVs. PAL has a higher resolution for the same screen size, so if you're playing a game made with the NTSC norm in mind, it doesn't fill the entire screen anymore.

PAL-M is not PAL:

Image
http://www.vcolor.com.br/nova/sistemas.htm

The only similarity it has with PAL is in the color synchronism. All the rest is the same as in NTSC, so it's actually a modified NTSC.

Here's Soul Calibur running at 50 Hz in my Brazilian PAL-M TV:

In my 20" TV the image scrolls like crazy at 50 Hz. In my mom's 29" TV it doesn't scroll, but it has a huge black bar at the top of the screen, and 30-40 percent of the bottom of the image is missing.

And here's it at 60 Hz:

Alright, so I induced a cdi image full of cool homebrew games, emulators and Open BOR, but I can't get BOR to work at all, the thing boots, and I can select and play all the other games, but BOR just blank screens.

Which mods work for sure? Or should it be working without any mods? What should be popping up when I select OpenBor?

ALL should be working, but only 50% do. There are several problems with the Dreamcast port atm, but you can expect them to be solved soon.

The last time I played my Dreamcast before unpacking it this week was back in 2002. Most of what I knew about compiling images and creating self-booting discs has been forgotten.

I enjoyed playing the few of the BOR mods I had back then, but would like to try out some of the newer projects. I remember needing a ton of tools to create a self-booting image using the Echelon pack. I certainly don't want to relearn that process. Hopefully, things have progressed since then. Is it still so painful?

Is there an easier way of compiling an image and putting a few of these mods onto a single disc? And is there a limit as to the number of mods that can be compiled together?

Thanks in advance.
