Can Killer Instinct 1/2/Gold appear on the Virtual Console?
Does Nintendo own all rights to Killer Instinct, or is it a property of Rare? I'd love to see at least Killer Instinct Gold in the VC.

It looks like they both owned some stake in it - the copyright notice on the arcade version of KI 1 says "(C) 1994 Nintendo/Rare Ltd. / Game by Rare Ltd. / Killer Instinct is a trademark of Nintendo". My guess would be that Nintendo owns the "Killer Instinct" trademark and any rights to the characters themselves (which itself is a legal gray area), while Rare owns the copyrights for the actual artwork and code of the games. However, Nintendo might have a license to distribute KI 1/2/Gold even if they aren't actually the copyright holder, and all sorts of things might have been changed as part of the deal selling Rare to Microsoft. This is part of the problem with our current copyright system - it's often very difficult (and in many cases even impossible) to tell with any certainty who currently holds the copyright to a given work...

Indeed. I absolutely loved KI Gold for N64. OMG, the playtime that game got between me and a couple of buddies was insane. For nostalgia sake, I popped it in not to long ago and...wow. I couldn't even play through two matches before I was bored. This game suffered horribly with time.Nyarlathotep wrote:I was never much a fan of KI when it came out, but I suspect even fans 'back in the day' would be disapointed with it now.
It really hasn't aged well.

Same here, the graphics amazed me and the soundtrack was very good as well. I really got a kick out of all the combos.Sir Savant wrote:Never played Gold, but the Snes version is still awesome.

They could just (re)port this.butters wrote:Knowing Capcom, they'd rather release a Street Fighter Collection that will retail for $50.Sir Slash wrote:bleh

I haven't seen a proper SF game in a Nintendo console (non portable) since the SNES days.

The last "original" SF (if that could be applied to this particular series) was SFIII - 3rd Strike in 1999, 2000 on DC, and 2004 on PS2/Xbox as a part of the Anniversary Collection, which also included Hyper SF II (last SF Arcade game AFAIK, just a modified SSFII-X). I think 3s was also released as an individual PS2 title, but I'm not sure.
Last SF game to hit a Nintendo console was SFA2; other than that there's a SFA game for Gameboy Color and SSFII Turbo Revival for GBA. And I think that's it. Unless you wanna count VC SFII as a Wii game.
