Since when has prerendered stuff been an indicator on the rendering power of a system?Green Ranger wrote:Don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but how about Alone in The Dark: The New Nightmare and Evil Dead: Hail To The King? I hear the pre-rendered backgrounds are enough to drool over.
My pc can display some very lifelike 4.1megapixel pictures as well, looking better than Crysis, not bad for a 350mHz K6 :p

Can we, someday, know the Dreamcast True Power ?

Planet Harriers was an arcade-only release. And it actually ran on the Hikaru board, not the NAOMI.
Lines join in faint discord and the Stormwatch brews

yea. um... except you know, that whole extra SH4. EXACTLY THE SAME!RMD wrote:Hikaru is just naomi with an extra effects chip. Nothing that couldnt be handled on dc with a little downing in quality. Nothing hardly noticable though.

lol, yeah that was one of the cheesiest things of Shenmue: A snowy day, and later that night, after something horrible has happened, rain and lightning
On that day, did you see a black car. It's almost winter again, I should be picking up this game again. Shenmue 1 usually gets attention in December, while Shenmue 2 gets played in spring. It's almost as if I try to keep up with the ingame dates.

I SEE, now this doesn't really show dreamcast power or anything but in Project Berkly (NTSC/J VF3 bonus disc) the Dojo roof is slightly broken allowing Rain to land on Iwao which looked really slick.
Despite beeing an FMV it also suggests that Iwao's face would be rendered in dreamcast not the pictures attached in the final version

I find the realtime images of the final version look better than these prerendered ones btw, much more detail. I think I once saw that video, but I don't know where.

I went to my friend's house the other day. He knew that I loved Shenmue, so he showed me a new game he got for PS2: Yakuza. It reminded me a lot of Shenmue.
Since this is a "Show the Dreamcast's Real Power" topic, I thought we could discuss an interesting comparison. Sega's Shenmue II (DC) vs. Sega's Yakuza (PS2).
Compare:
Yakuza:
Shenmue II:
*note* I couldn't find any decent DC Shenmue II screenshots, so every one besides the first is an Xbox screenshot. Don't bitch and tell me that isn't fair, because I own both versions and the only thing the Xbox does is anti alias and texture filter a bit more. There's no "graphical upgrade" and I think the Xbox version looks blurrier. I don't think it's debatable that Shenmue II running on a Dreamcast with VGA is the best looking scenario either.
As for the comparison, it can't get much fairer. Shenmue and Yakuza are by Sega, and they were both developed towards the end of each console's lifespan (prematurely for Dreamcast). They are both pushing each console graphically, and both have around the same framerate with slowdowns.
The first thing that I notice is the snazzy lighting effects on the signs in Yakuza. That looks really nice. Yakuza definitely can have more people than Shenmue II onscreen at a time. I'm not sure, but it also looks like the people in Yakuza might have a tad bit higher poly counts (major characters in shenmue seem to have more detail than Yakuza, though).
Shenmue is obviously less jagged. I also notice the traditional higher texture quality of the DC. There seems to be more color going on in Shenmue II. Despite the fact that overall character poly count may be lower, Shenmue II faces own Yakuza.
It's a close one, but I'm going to have to say that I personally find Shenmue II a tad better looking than Yakuza.
What do you guys think?

That would be a fun little compairison for you to post or discuss here: http://shenmue.planets.gamespy.com/forum/index.php .
You would probably get a really interesting discussion about it.
