I could have gotten it the first time they offered it, but I would just rather use Izarc instead.

Awesome. I don't use winrar all that much but it will be great to have the full version again.

It was only a one-day giveaway. They probably killed it at midnight.

7-Zip is better than Izarc nowadays. Well, Izarc was buggy as hell when I tried it...

7-Zip is just better. It can open pretty much anything, even lzh. 7-Zip can't MAKE rars, but once you have it, and since it's a completely free and open source program, you can just switch over to 7z for everything.

I agree, I LOVE 7zip.

Once it compressed an entire project that I was working on from 40mb to about 600k (of course it was mostly text documents, but still impressive).

For the record, Winrar can open 7zip but it can't compress to them. I don't do much if any compressing (most of the stuff on my hard drive is things like mpegs and avis that are already almost as compressed as they can be), so Winrar is fine for me.

I've yet to see any clear advantages of it over winrar. Oh well. The classics will never die.

That's kind of a pointless argument, considering this thread was promoting a free version of Winrar.

7-Zip can open rar files. It's own file compression scheme is also about 10% higher compression than rar and is supported by more programs.

meh.

With harddrive sizes becoming so large nowadays and programs still remaining relatively small, the compression programs are becoming obsolete. It's a great way to package programs and the like, but I'd sooner take ease of use/compatibility over better compressing algorithm.

Then again in my Windows days I used to use PowerArchiver for everything.... <3 that program, but not sure if its still around (or still free).

Edit: Although still compression, I prefer mountable image files more than anything... they're so much easier to use without the need to compress. Mount, install, eject. Done.
