Retro Sonic Engine For Dreamcast

This forum is for discussion pertaining to homebrew and indie software for the Dreamcast, such as homebrew games, emulators/interpreters, and other homebrew software/applications. Porting requests and developmental ideas are not to be made here; you can make those here. If you need any help burning discs for homebrew software, this is the place to ask as well.

Retro Sonic Engine For Dreamcast

Post by DcSteve »

This DC test release version featuring 3 levels works great. It looks to currently be the best way to play all new sonic on your dreamcast until genesis emulation is improved.

Sweet! Nice find! So, is this brand new? I'm downloading now, but is this currently being worked on? Sonic is so awsome, and I'd love to see a fan's take on the series. Thanks for posting this!

Someone mentioned at DCEmu that it uses WinCE libs ripped from a Midway game. Too bad.

There must be homebrew (legal) libs that match or better the quality of those wince libs that someone can easily recompile with. (when the source is released)

this is what i like to see happening in the DC scene. Now hopefully this doesn't become a forgotten dead project in a few months to years.

This is like the sonic 4 we have all been waiting for. This is also the best homebrew ive tried for dreamcast. Even for a "test build" this plays perfectly. When they start using the legal libs, i most likely will start a site/scene devoted to this and its mods.

Half right. It wouldn't be a simple recompile. It would be a completely separate port, the hardest part of which would be the renderer.

Yeah, I'm guessing that the windows port uses DirectX which probably made the Dreamcast port a piece of cake using the WinCE Dev Kit for Dreamcast. Depending on how he designed the graphics renderer, a legal Dreamcast port could constitute a fair amount of work.

It sounds like he wrote a hardware-based renderer for the Dreamcast version, which would rule out the WinCE port being a piece of cake. That must have been a substantial bit of work, in fact,

Good, that makes translating it to KOS API version easier.

The image worked perfect for me. Just double click on it to open in nero. Then finalize burn and thats it.

I have to say that I agree. Whether or not this "hurts anybody" can be debated, and since it is using libraries ripped from a game (and that the authors have no legal right to distribute), the entire thing is illegal. While this may be an interesting project, I think that until it is rewritten with KOS, the downloads should NOT be linked to.

If I had moderator powers in this forum, I would take the links away.
