Life in prison > Death in terms of punishment
Why? Simple! The person lives the rest of their life in a crappy jail and then dies after suffering there instead of just skipping straight to death.

Life in a federal max security prison costs ~$100,000/year. Still better than just killing the scum?Tyne wrote:Life in prison > Death in terms of punishment

Source? This sounds like one of those soundbites that pundits produce by playing with numbers.butters wrote:Life in a federal max security prison costs ~$100,000/year.

They were throwing that number around on Fox News yesterday. Today they were showing what the Federal Ultramax Prison is like. 2 armed guards at all times, only ~40 prisoners in the whole thing, solitary confinement 23 hours a day, 1 hour a day of recreation while legs are chained, all cell furniture made of stone (including the bed). Most folks would rather die than have to go there.Ex-Cyber wrote:Source? I don't care what it costs. Look at it like this: If you lock a guy up for life and it turns out he's innocent, you can let him out and pay him off. You can't give him the time back, but at least he's still alive.
Now suppose you sentence a guy to death and it turns out he's innocent. What can you do then? The state has murdered an innocent person.
If the price is really an issue, feed them cheaper food, cut back on privileges, etc. No one said prison is supposed to be fun.

Facts are facts. I don't care either way - both life and death are both harsh punishments. Look at my edit to my earlier post for the conditions of the prison he will be a guest at the rest of his life.Roofus wrote: I don't care what it costs. They were saying that only the worst federal criminals are put in there; the ones that do things that are considered treasonous. Timothy McVey is in there.Roofus wrote:My understanding was that thoe places are reserved for people who do stuff while already in prison.
And yeah, that place does sound pretty harsh.
