This forum is for discussion pertaining to homebrew and indie software for the Dreamcast, such as homebrew games, emulators/interpreters, and other homebrew software/applications. Porting requests and developmental ideas are not to be made here; you can make those here. If you need any help burning discs for homebrew software, this is the place to ask as well.

Vanguard Wars DC Released

Post by Imerion »

I made this game for the GBAX GP2X Coding Competition 06, but now I have created a Dreamcast-version as well. Vanguard Wars is a fast-paced arcadegame in which you must control your spaceship and defeat numerous enemies and bosses. There are three game modes : Endless, Arcade and Survival, four levels, four bosses and five weapons. Vanguard Wars has colorfull backgrounds and loads of explosions as well as suiting music.

As before : There is no image-files yet, since I cannot create them. (A Linux-version of Bootdreams would be great). If you use Bootdreams you can create an imagefile easily. It can be found here : http://www.consolevision.com/members/fackue/

Any comments on how well it works will be appreciated. Especially if the saving works or not.

My DC is broke right now so I can't test anything unfortunately, but as most would say, "props."

About BootDreams, there's no linux tools to create CDI images so a Linux version would be pretty tough to do if not, impossible for me. The most I'd probably be able to do is have a CDrecord GUI and maybe support for burning CDI images. Keep this quiet though because it's still just an idea.

Not to troll the thread (or discredit fackue for that matter), but if you need plain file image creation under Linux I could get that added fairly easily.

Imerion, give it a try and let me know how it goes. You'll need Wine installed.

Loading screen could be added and speed can be increased. "Y" is used for entry in menus, not the button commonly used for that, perhaps I should change that. The problem is with saving to vmu. It seems saving does not work. If someone who knows how to properly save things to the VMU in the DC Fenix Runtime, please PM me.

just replace the original vwars.fpg with the themed fpg and selfboot with selfboot inducer..no binhacking nessacary.please keep imerions original readme file in your selfboot.. heres the link.

I just remembered the DC version had no readme, so forget I mentioned that. :)
I can see the lifecount and score on my tv, but part of it is hidden.. Perhaps I should use another resolution than 640x480? As for the score, I don't really know how to make it save. If someone wants to look at the source and tell me how to write to the VMU correctly, it would be a great help. Otherwise Ill try again when I have time, but that might take a while since I rather work on my next project. :)
