Tetris.

You can play for hours and still know that you haven't beaten the game. It is just so addictive. And there are so many variations.

That looks like a Best RPGs of All Time list with a couple of platformers thrown in for good measure, and FFX as #1!?

Its amazing how Japan is know for being so innovative and creative when it comes to videogames, yet that Famitsu poll, and many other similar polls consistently prove that the Japanese generallly have a much less varied market than we do.

Any games lists that either rank GTA:SA THAT close to the top 10 or list Tetris towards the end of the list is bunk.

Chrono Trigger: It's surprising that such a detailed and expansive game was able to be made for SNES.

I saw that poll from Famitsu the other day and think it's really surprising. For one thing, there are only 2 non-Japanese games on the whole list (GTA:VC and Sim City, which are poor examples of what the rest of the world can produce), and to call FFX #1 is ridiculous.

The list really brings out the difference between US and Japanese gamers, though. It seems to me like Japan loves those epic, emotionally moving, RPGs, while US likes the more "pick up and play" type games.

98. Gradius (1986)
99. Super Mario Bros III (1988)
100. Resident Evil IV (PS2) 2005
Notable absences: Super Metroid (EGM's #1 best game ever), NiGHTS, Phantasy Star, Skies of Arcadia, Daytona USA, Half Life, Red Faction, Deus Ex, Marathon, Shenmue, Rayman, Pulseman, King of Fighters, Last Blade, Guilty Gear, Ikaruga, Radiant Silvergun... nothing by Cave, Toaplan, Raizing, Psikyo, or Takumi... no shmup other than Gradius! :o
okay, another noticeable thing about that list, is a VERY large chunk of games on that list are made by either squaresoft or nintendo, i think that poll is VERY biased...not saying that they dont make good games, dont get me wrong, but if you take a quick skim of that list, it's got literally almost every squaresoft game ever made......i'm surprised i dont see unlimited saga on that list......

Don't be hating now, if he feels that those are the best games in his mind then so be it. I don't consider it biased, it all depends on what games you had the best times with are the best games. In my opinion anyways.
Have you played dreamcast today?

I liked FFX. I thought the sphere grid system was quite well thought out and interesting as a leveling mechanism.

There is no such thing as 'the best game'. It's like deciding what the best fruit is. You can't say a pear is better than a banana, it's a matter of personal taste :)

While I like Shenmue 2 way more than Shenmue 1 from a gameplay pov, I still think that chapter 1 is more impressive because of all the little details. It really is a tradeoff between details and size of the world in this game. And you can't compare the stories because they follow up on each other (unlike when comparing two other random rpg's)

But as a series, Shenmue is rated very high by me, it's one of the most impressive pieces of software with beautiful graphics, one of the best soundtracks ever, and a great story and gameplay.

Other games that I enjoyed a lot:
NES
- Super Mario Bros
- Kirby's Adventure
- Double Dragon 2 and 3
- Rescue Rangers 2
- Dynablaster (aka Bomberman 2)
- Probotector 2 (aka Contra 2)
- Tecmo Cup (aka Captain Tsubasa)

Gameboy
- The legend of Zelda: Link's awakening (a classic)

Snes
- Seiken Densetsu 3 (aka Secret of Mana 2)
- Streetracer (heavenly multiplayer gameplay)
- Lufia 2 (I'm very biased when it comes down to this game, it was my first RPG, then came FF7)
- Tetris Attack (great puzzle game, I loved it)

PSX
- FF7 (I've got the pc version though)
- MGS (nuff said)

Dreamcast
- F355 Challenge (the REAL driving simulator)
- Baldr Force Exe (pure oldskool gameplay fun)
- Shenmue
- Soul Calibur (legendary fighting game, still standing strong even today)
- Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver (10 seconds of loading for a whole game, impressive, just like everything else about this game)

PC
- Baldurs Gate saga (THE best RPG series ever imho)
- Settlers 2/3/4 (I loved the economics and gameplay, I can play this game for hours)

If anyone wants to know more about the reasons why I picked this game, feel free to ask, I'm too tired to give reasons for the oldest games (I started with the DC games)

About the worst Final Fantasy: Can you guys say 'mystic quest'?
You feel at ease as you flock with the masses,
What do you see with your heads in their asses?
Keep on railing at what I believe,
Call me insane and I am proud to be.

I have to disagree with toastman, i thought the Sphere system sucked & that FFX was the worst RPG i have ever played.
I would not put it in a top 1000 games.
Let alone #1, i bought FFX & FFX-2 & found FFX so bad that after only playing it for about 8hrs that i did not even bother with FFX-2 & put them both away in storage.

Just to point out though the UK peeps got screwed with FFX as we got a crap 50hz port over that made everything in the game look out of proportion. The aspect ratio was just not right objects & players looked wider/ fatter than they where meant to & if you tried to use a cheat to make it 60hz the sound became messed up.

As for best game ever opposed to my favorite games, can't decide.
I would very much like to say something old i played as a kid like Manic Minor or Jet Set Willy but i just can't. Too many other games come to mind.

Best game ever based on what me & some of my friends might agree on would be:

FF VII or Halo 2
I am the hope of the universe, i am the answer to all living things that cry out for peace.
I am protector of the innocent, i am the light in the darkness. "I AM TRUTH".

I really, really enjoyed FFX. FFX-2 was horrible, though.
