NesterDC SE - All is ready

This forum is for discussion pertaining to homebrew and indie software for the Dreamcast, such as homebrew games, emulators/interpreters, and other homebrew software/applications. Porting requests and developmental ideas are not to be made here; you can make those here. If you need any help burning discs for homebrew software, this is the place to ask as well.

AMAZING release Scherzo! I really appreciate all the work you've put into this! That must have been a hell of a lot of data entry for you to go through. :D

Here are a few things that I noticed that would make this already great release a bit better:

-Putting in a general image for those games that do not have box scans/cart scans/etc. For example it would be better just to have a basic Nintendo logo there instead of an empty space.

-Adding support for the viewing of maps for games such as Dragon Warrior, or the addition of a general image viewer (you probably just didn't have time to implement this, that's alright  )

-Support of subdirectories when browsing games (already said)

-Pressing up to go to "return to main menu" instead of down 10 times
(already said)

As well, I seem to have found a bug that locked up the entire emulator.
Here's how I found it: First, I selected Dragon Warrior 3 and then selected "view manual". Instead of opening the manual, it went back to the game selection screen with only the titles on the bottom and no box scans/cart scans/etc. I then scrolled to Dragon Warrior 3 and selected it again. This caused the emulator to lock up entirely. I'll investigate this further if you wish.

Finally, I don't want to beat a dead horse, but even if you just included a text file viewer into the emulator for the FAQs then it could serve the purpose. You wouldn't have to include any FAQs with it at all. Then we could take resposibility for downloading all uncopyrighted or copyrighted FAQs. In a way, it's the same idea as the emulator itself. You give us the chance to play the ROMs of games we actually own, but there is also a chance of us playing thousands of ROMs that we don't legally have the right to play. I don't see FAQs as that big of a deal in the emulator compared to the manuals, carts, etc, but it's something you can think of.
:)

Again, great job! I'll be fooling around with this thing for a long time!

Everything is just beautiful.

Button lag is gone, speed and sound are perfect and looking at the boxes, listening to the NSFs (and playing with the volumes) and reading the manuals make this, as others already said, much more than an emulator. I could (and I will) spend hours doing all this.

The very small problems it has don't bother me at all. I can't even remember what those are, right now.

Well, there is just one thing: River City Ransom, US version, doesn't run fullspeed, especially on two players mode. Don't know if other versions work normally...

Anyway, THANK YOU for this release, scherzo!

Everything is just beatiful.

hi, im in need of a little help here (not with your release though). how can i sort my .nes out (for example i would like to filter out all japanese, and various other languages (also bad versions and overdmps) preferably a tool with zip support and easy to use...
been googling for ages now, so any suggestions would be great. i remember a little tool on one of these forums that would copy games from folder to folder via a txt file, im after sth like that but one that uses header info and easier to use as creating such a txt file is an arse..
its been ages since ive made a nes disk and am really looking forwrd to trying your release
cheers

Excellent Work Scherzo - how many times has it been said? Not quite enough...

Excellent Work!

Oh... but! There is always a but... My setup doesn't have any analog support - I know it's kind of wierd - but I have the DC in an arcade cabinet and have the joystick wired to the DPAD - hence, no analog joystick... which means I cannot go to the in-game menu, which means I cannot change games.

I know everything else is insanely configurable - I don't suppose there is a hidden feature which makes this configurable? An ideal solution for me would be pressing START on both Player 1 & Player 2 - the likelyhood that this will happen during a game is low, but it means I have a way to get back to the menu... Just a whinge - you know how it is - we like to whinge...

Being able to assign both joysticks to one player could also be cool for certain games - would be brilliant if there is a Robotron for the NES - is there a Robotron for the NES?!!

Of course - if the source is around, I can compile it myself..

Like syd said a general image for unrecognized games would be nice, can't wait for the modified builder though. but great work scherzo. really a true work of art. hell even saying that is work of art is an understatement.

captain skyhawk.. sorry for being off topic here.. but did you ever figure out why your game genie codes dont work for me on 7.1?

the only thing i can think of are the game genie codes on dcemulation.org are bad.. or it wont work if you use the program selfboot. OR maybe you only support eu roms and not usa roms. i dont know. the codes that i downloaded for nesterdc se work perfect.

First off, I havn't tried this yet, but just by reading the specs I can say I'm going to be VERY impressed.

What I'd like to know before I burn this is if there is a download source to get the images to go with all the games?

Secondly do all the light gun games work with the DC gun?

milfzor wrote:XDelusion, all the stuff you could possibly want is downloaded directly from scharzo's website...you can get screenshots of the games, screenshots of the titles of the games, scans of the actual carts, and scans of the game's boxes......its all automatically downloaded, placed as needed and the image is automatically created for you...as for lightgun games, not too sure since i dont have a dreamcast gun unfortunately.....it is by far THE best emulator out for NES on any video game system for sure, and outdoes many, if not all computer emulators for NES as well. I must admit, this is right up there with neo geo cd emulation as far as the cool factor goes. BTW, it will also snag up game genie codes for you, and place them as needed, and NSF music as well........all in all, its one of the best homebrew apps for dreamcast.
Actually, it is one of the best homebrew apps ever for anything, but that's beside the point...

I did want to mention that there is NO lightgun support as of the moment...I have a lightgun and the Duck Hunt ROM and it DOES NOT work...one of the last things I would love to see implemented...oh, and I don't know if it is just me, but my copy of Mega Man 3 freezes after hitting start at the main menu...I don't even get to the level select screen...I was having trouble saving using Save States also, but that was likely because of my VMUs being full...I cleared them out, so the saving will now probably work...we'll see next time I try...

No light gun? What? I'll have a look. If that is the case, then knock it down from the very best emu, to one of the very best! :)

Seriously though I'm making an image now, and the Builder tool is amazing, I'm QUITE impressed with how it works. That's some source I'm sure could be used for MANY things. nxDOOM and Quake come to mind...
