Blown controller port FAQ
Seeing as this question is asked once or twice a week in this forum, I've decided to put together a FAQ on what causes it and how to fix it. So, if you feel like it, post here or email me what you were doing and what controller you were using when your F1 resistor blew. Anyone who contributes will be given credit in the FAQ. Thanks.
I am stupid
I'm not that bright and I need step by step instructions on how to fix my blown controller ports. This would be extremly helpful, thank you.

Here's my first version. I wrote it in about an hour. Any feedback or contributions would be appreciated before I label this a release version.

not bad so far
This will be very handy here, make it good so it is a sticky post!
I'd contribute the info in my post, and replies by Oz and tikitom regarding the variations in resistors, and the possiblity of using fusable or resettable resistors:
http://www.dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=8688
just have the info in there for those who care about it, with a FAQ you should try to cover all bases. Yes, the carbons WORK, but ppl should be aware of the possible consequence of using them.....

Yeah, I have both, but I've already put the new resistor into my Dreamcast, so there's nothing to document.ZacMc wrote:Pictures would be helpfull. Do you have a digital camera or scanner?
I am thinking about doing an HTML version once I get the content down, so if anyone wants to document the repair on theirs and send me the pics, it would be much appreciated.
Oh, and Version 0.1 is up. Use the same link as before.

If you could make an HTML page out of it with some pictures then it will definately be put in a prominent place for all to see.
I look forward to seeing the finished FAQ
I would help myself, but I have not suffered from the problem (which is surprising considering the bad luck I usually suffer from )

Sh!tty Pictures
I spent an hour tearing open my Dreamcast today and taking 10 pictures documenting the removal of the controller board and which resistor to replace. Unfortunately, they all looked like this. I think that one was a close-up of the offending resistor. I'll have to take more tomorrow. Oh well...I guess I'll have to take them outside, or bring in the shop light or something.

I apreciate you doing this greatly, I'm practically a hobo and if I wreck my dreamcast I'll never have another one so pictures are particulary useful.

If you are from the UK the circuitry inside the Dreamcast is different, and the resistor F1 has a different value.
I got my DC for ?3 from a bootsale, which had a blown fuse (the guy didn't tell me this though) - anyway, I took it apart and located the resistor, which i THINK was 3.9 ohms (you will have to check) - it's important that you replace the resistor with one of a HIGHER value (or the same, but you would be lucky to find one). I used a 10 ohm resistor from Maplins and that is working fine for me so far.
Hope this helps any of you people from the UK!
Cheers,
Matt

Here's the first HTML Version. No pictures yet, this was mostly to get the formatting down. BTW, Since I've already replaced the resistor, I need someone who needs to replace theirs to photograph it. All I can do is document is the removal of the PCB.

Fairly impressive, it should help a lot of people.
You can use this picture of the innards of my console to show where the resistor in question is located if you want:

Or if you want some more detailed photos then let me know I will try to do them.

you mean that you don't have a resistor at all?!? talk about a major fire hazardGeorgie wrote:My controler port burned out three month's ago and to fix the problem I
