NeoDC compatability

This forum is for discussion pertaining to homebrew and indie software for the Dreamcast, such as homebrew games, emulators/interpreters, and other homebrew software/applications. Porting requests and developmental ideas are not to be made here; you can make those here. If you need any help burning discs for homebrew software, this is the place to ask as well.

NeoDC compatability

Post by Quzar »

I'm looking into improving compatability in NeoDC for the next release ( I have been considering a 2.4 release as opposed to my huge future full emulator release) but my compatability list is lacking. If anyone can give the working status (wether or not it works, what bugs if any it has, if the bugs appear in the pc version, and only speed if it is unusually slow or way faster than it should be) for the following games I would be very grateful:

NeoDC Compatibility

Post by Cormega »

Hey Quzar, this isn't related to the topic unfortunately but while you are talking about NeoDC and Neo Geo games I needed to ask this. Can I PM you a question regarding Neo Geo games. I feel if I ask this question in the forums I'm almost sure the topic will be locked. I would feel utterly grateful if you could respond. Thanks! :D

The compatability list is posted in the first post. It has absolutely no reference to speed and sound, but assume above fullspeed without sound and close to fullspeed with sound.

With NEO CD can you play it with a ROM or do you have to own the actual NEOGEO game?

Cause I never had a neogeo

It emulates the NeoGeoCD system and requires CDs that would be readable on that system. Be careful because this discussion is treading close to the illegal.

Believe me ive never burned any illegal games and im not the type to do so. I buy legal games all the time and have a huge collection.

With that being said, I think even NEOGEO the company itself wouldnt mind if someone played one of their games from 1990 which is no longer for sale.

Technically its probably illegal but I seriously doubt the company would even mind. If they plan on releasing a Magical Drop 2 remake even after I try to get the emu, id be glad to buy it. But somehow I don't see it happening.

Again im not a bootlegger but some very old games I think are fair ground.

With that said, would a basic CD-R do the trick for magical drop 2? Or do you need the "legal" original copy of the game which probably 3 people in the world own?

The original discs have no real copy protection on it and modern cd burners can make exact copies of them playable in the original machine and this emulator.

Oh ok. I think it would be impossible to find an original disc of magical drop 2 to copy though.

Is their a site that has it for download? (no i do not want illegal copies of games, but just this NEOGEO magical drop2)

It was actually an arcade game too which is in MAME.

Do you think im better off using the MAMEDC to try to play it?

Ah, but what you're asking for IS illegal, and has no place here.

However, it wouldn't be very fair to Quzar to have his thread locked for it. Perhaps selective surgery instead?

Thats actually not too bad a price for a Neo Geo CD game. Good luck trying to find any Neo Geo CD game for $3! Metal Slug itself sells for $100 if you're lucky.

If its not worth more than $3, it shouldn't be worth your time. Unless your time is worthless. I wasn't debating morality, only pointing out that it is still illegal and not allowed here. Besides, don't you have google?

I?m very sorry Quzar, but i?m moving to a city without internet services. my games are already there and communication will be hard to do with dc people. but in the recent past, i?ve tested some games, and i cant remember all the results, but i will try to post something here:

KOF 97 resets the dreamcast after the character selection menu(backup. the original one does not even boot).
GAN GAN bsod.
ALHPA MISSION 2 bsod.
RYUUKO NO KEN 2 hangs after pressing start.
ART OF FIGHTING 3, its only garbage.
BASEBALL STARS 2, runs withsome garbage and cdda.
FATAL FURY, runs without any sound.
FATAL FURY SPECIAL works very well, very smooth(somewhat slow with cdda(no timming), and full sfx.
GALAXY FIGHT hangs randomlly.
KOF96 collection runs with garbage. unplayable.
LAST RESORT, slow. no sound
FINAL ROMANCE 2, almost perfect, no sfx.(version2 hangs at VS. logo, bsod)
BIG TOURNAMENT GOLF runs with garbage, its somewhat playable.
PLEASURE GOAL needs cdda and RASTER.
QUEST OF JONG MASTER, PERFECT.
STREET HOOP, sloooooooooooow. i?m waiting for this one.
GOWCAISER, bsod.
WINDJAMMERS, garbage, cdda no fx.

quzar, please do not stop with development of this emu.
i will try to contact some guys at mame and raine when possible, to discover something to improve on rasters and emulation. refer this to the 'history.dat' on mame. on this document, it shows HEAVY tricks and explain the emulation errors and accuracy of the 68000 emulation, z80 and vdp from neogeo. surely u can use it to neodc. it?s a good thing to take a look on it.

i will use this space to ask for these emulators for any coder if possible.

X68000(final fight never looked so good as the arcade in this conversion. u can use also the excellent midi port music.)

MSX2+(come on, this will not be hard to port. the dcmsx already do a lot of things. our friends at BLUEMSX and OPENMSX can support ANYONE to port this. they are very very very friendlly)

PC98(its a matter of use NEKO2PROJECT code in the dreamcast. thats what i thing.)

also, ive mentioned before the RETRO REMAKES page. they are almost all SDL and code free. take a look on the great number of games that could run on the dreamcast.)

thanks for your time.

A x68000 emu would be cool :D Thanks for your compatibility tests btw. I will do some tests too as soon as I found some time.

KING OF FIGHTERS 99 (SNK)

Graphical garbige during loading screens, music but no SFX. Everything else is fine, it just doesn't run full speed.

SAMURAI SHODOWN 3 [SAMURAI SPIRITS 3] (SNK)

SFX sometimes buggy (stops working, than starts again, plus strange sounds repeads quite often ), otherwise working, but quite slow too

TWINKLE STAR SPRITES (ADK)

No SFX (but music), and extreme slowdowns during gameplay.
