3.3V LEDs for DC.

Post by GyroVorbis »

I'm getting pissed of here. I've been to like every RadioShack in the valley and not a single one of them had any 3.3V LED.

Where have you guys found them? Hell, I can't even find any on Ebay...

Ooooh. Thanks.

How many mm do I need for DC? Is there anything else I need to know besides voltage and size?

5mm. It would help to know the mA rating. If your doing a straight LED swap I think the power LED gives 20/30. Which basically means everything will work on it, but some ultra ultra bright ones won't be full brightness

http://stores.ebay.com/LED-Store_W0QQss ... esstQQtZkm Thats where I get mine off of Ebay. The guy sells em in packs of 10 and up and they usually are cheaper than one LED at Radioshcak.

You dont have to use exactly 3.3! I used a 3.7 on mine, and seen a lot of guys get away with 3v.

Really? I read somewhere that you must have 3.3V

What would be brighter, the 5V or the 3V?

Yeah, that's what I suspected. I might actually be able to do 3V from radio shack...

Well, I've successfully done my first DC mod last night. I replaced that ugly default LED with a nice 3.7V blue LED. I'll post a picture later. Thanks all!

I cut the 3.3 volt trace and installed a 5 volt LED. I jumped to the 5 volt line in the power supply board for power.

let me set this straight. my dad is an ee. (electrical engineer). I told him to get me LED's that were rated for 3.3v and he got me ones that were rated3v but could handle up to 30 amps. I took one of those suckers and put 9v of power in it and it worked perfectly and nothing happened. point is dont waste yor time finding LED's that are rated fro up to 3.3v just get some that can handle 30 amps. take it from a geek

The 3.3V is more of a suggestion than anything else. You can safely use a LED from 3V to whatever (obviously the higher the dimmer and at a certain point you wont get enough power to light it). Just that if it's a lot lower than the 3.3V, the LED will blow, at which point you need to use the correct resistor to make em work. If you look though, most colors are rated at varying voltages, but most come in 3.3V like blue, green, and white. However, some colors like red and yellow are usually around 2.4ish
