Uhh, what causes self boot's to Load but then reset the DC ?

This forum is for discussion pertaining to homebrew and indie software for the Dreamcast, such as homebrew games, emulators/interpreters, and other homebrew software/applications. Porting requests and developmental ideas are not to be made here; you can make those here. If you need any help burning discs for homebrew software, this is the place to ask as well.

UPDATE:

I figured it out, read on if you have similar problems....
-----

Anyways,
I burned Stella a few months a go. It was the first DC Emu I burned and was impressed to see that it worked. I used Selfboot buddy and plain files.

But Ooops,
I lost my disc. No big deal I thought, I still have the image, ill just make it again. Well, no matter what I do, It dont work no more.

I have tried just about everything I can think of, I have used every combination of programs and CDs, Im losing my mind.

THE DISC WILL BOOT PAST THE WHITE SEGA SCREEN, START LOADING, GO THE A BLANK SCREEN, AND THEN RESETS THE DREAMCAST.

BUT, I have used these EXACT same CDs, files, computer, and DC to burn (that I lost) that worked PERFECT.

P.S. - Just another note, when I use CDRECORD I cant get them to boot. BUT when I use BIN2BOOT it will boot past the sega screen - BUT, I have the old audio/data DC (I have bleemcast GT2 and it boots fine) - Is this normal ???

(UPDATE, I figured out that if you do not have ROMS in a 2600 folder, it will crash the DC. You have to create a 2600 folder, add roms, and (I dont know if this is relivant or not, but, you then create a dcstella.ini file explained below) Still havent figured out why CDRECORD wont work for self boots.

It kinda sounds like your binaries are unscrambled - they're supposed to be scrambled.

I tried scrambling the 1st_read ,

But now, instead of restarting, it locks up on a blank black screen after the boot screen...

It does the same thing when I try a boot-loader menu, it says loading and then locks up on the black screen.

I had a stella self boot working before with these same exact files, i didnt scramble them either, so I really just dont understand...

Any ideas ?

DUHHHHHH TO ME !!!!!!

Here is some interesting info for anyone having this problem (I saw several posts with similar issues)

LOL, if there isnt any ROMS on the disc, it will crash the DC !!!!

You have to create and put your ROMS in a folder called '2600'... :-)

Here is what I did to make it work:

Ok, a 30 pack of CD's later, DUHHHHHH I figure it out ...

If there isnt a folder with roms in it, it will crash the DC.
Here is what I did to make it work, which may or may not be nessesary but works perfect when I do this:

Unzip stelladc 2f

Add a folder called '2600'

Get ROMS. Rename them using stlist.exe or rename.exe (Explained here: http://www.atariage.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=27500 ) This makes a ROMS list text file, which I placed in the root folder and 2600 folder.
(I never figured out STList so I used to above link to renamer.exe)
I USED MY ROMS FROM MY PC EMULATION STELLA ROMS FOLDER that I had aquired over the years :-)

Make a new .ini file called dcstella.ini (Just a text file) Add the following:
charset.8x8.file=/dcstella.pro/c128.chs
charset.8x16.file=
title.image.file=/dcstella.pro/stella01.tga
title.image.xpos=0
title.image.ypos=0
select.image.file=/dcstella.pro/stella02.tga
select.image.xpos=0
select.image.ypos=0
select.menu.xpos=40
select.menu.ypos=192
select.menu.width=72
select.menu.height=16
roms.dir=/2600
roms.list.file=/2600/rom_list.txt
profiles.dir=/dcstella.pro

Use your favorite burning technique. I tend to use Burnero's self boot buddy, it works for me.

Fire it up.

ALSO,
Bugaboo offers stella 2f SBI files here http://website.lineone.net/~terryjr/quicksilva/

The SBI worked great as well. WHEN, there are actually ROMS in the 2600 folder.

Cool cool, peace.

I've never really tried Stella, so I'm glad you figured it out.
