i only ever used my pc and sometimes xbox for dvds. i was wondering can you hook your cable to a dvd player. see this mone tv my parents have, you have to have the cable hooked to the vcr to play. it wont play through the r/f by itself. i was wondering do normal dvd players work the same way.

Really? Hmm I should try it then. I had some movies to make divx to vcd anyway so might as well try one. What you think? XSVCD or KVCD?

If you have a dvd burner, you can get way better quality than kvcd or vcd. Use HalfD1 or fullD1, allocating as much bitrate as you feel needed. The xvid suggestion is dumb, not too many people have xvid players. What if he wants to bring (or give) the dvd to a friend to watch? Also wondering, can you decently author a xvid disc, with motion menus? Or do you just select the file?

If you have a dvd burner use KDVD duh. You can get excate quality of a 8.1GB movie onto a 4.3GB disk.

I have seen several sites saying kdvd is not as compatible as DVD. Anyone got a percentage?

The xvid solution is not dumb. Most my friends have it anyways if they dont I just make kvcd's.

Actualy when I do larger to smaller dvd's I always use the kvcd(kdvd w/e) gop structure and q-matrix and do 7passes in cce.

If you use the legal dvd resolutions and not too low of a bitrate. It will be 100% comptibal. See taken from here
kvcd.net wrote:Using KVCD parameters to create DVDs (KDVD), will enable you to create 100% DVD compliant MPEG-2 streams, capable of playing on any standard DVD player. This will allow you to put up to about 6 hours Full D-1 720x480 on one DVD, or about 10 hours at Half D-1 352x480.

About 50%
KVCD if down right can have a 90% Just keep the same resolution as a vcd and the same sound output. Just use CQ VBR and the kvcd matrix.
