Games that have aged poorly

Post by Stormwatch »

When I was 15, one of my favorite games was the arcade Spider-Man. But recently I played it on MAME again... and detested it for being shallow and boring.

Other old favorites have aged better, though. I can still play games like Strider, Streets of Rage, Out Run, Shinobi 3, Super Mario World, Starfox... and enjoy them as much as I did back in the day.

To you, what games have aged well or poorly?

Diddy Kong Racing. Back in the day, beat everything in it, loved it. Went back to it half a year ago, found the controls were crap, and threw it back in its box to preserve the good memories.

Cuz it's.... uhm.... Road Rash?

Tetris still owns all.

Most games by natsume seem to age well, also.

Then again, I LOVE quirky RPGs.

Agreed. I keep a N64 in my living room just for the purpose of playing that game.

On that note, I'm looking forward to the new Starfox game for Gamecube.

I played Mario Kart 64 the other week and I was surprised by how bare it all seemed, when I first played it years ago I was amazed at the leap from Super Mario Kart, now it seems positively lame in comparison to that, and especially in comparison to Double Dash.

Happens...

This is only my opinion, but I believe E.T. for the 2600 has aged pretty badly. :|

I agree with everyone that StarFox 64 has aged fine. Same with all goods tho. If its a really awsome game it normally stays really awsome.

However most saturn and psx 3d ages have aged poorly and could use graphical updates.

Vectorman and Sonic 3 both hold up well.

Any old sports game is laughable except for Tecmo Bowl.

The arcade version of Rastan has aged well, street fighter II, Robocop, Arcade Shinobi, Pacman/ms pacman, Xmen arcade and simpsons arcade. Super mario RPG, dragon warrior, dusty diamond all star softball, pinbot, Super mario kart, 7th saga. All of those aged well. Super mario II aged well too.

lol, i just got done playin vectorman for a while

tecmo bowl is one of the greatest football games available. i love playin it.

but ive got a game that didnt age well.

doom.

the snes, 32x, and saturn games now suck, but like 8+ years ago i loved playin them.

i went to play the saturn "port" of doom the other day, and couldnt stand it. (doom or hexen, and even duke nukem 3d was pretty bad after playin it)

driver 1 and 2 didnt age too well, although i still like playin through driver 1 (just re-started it yesterday)

Excitebike 64 is still fun to play, but it's controls are now awkward after playin mxunleashed and stuff...

thps1 is probalby the best aged one, with super mario 1/2/3/world being right behind.

Surpsingly enough, yeah, THPS 1 & 2 have aged beautifully. They're just so much better than the newer ones--words really can't describe it.

Another one that's aged well is Goldeneye for N64. That game pwns. So does Banjo-Kazooie, another one that's aged nicely.

Deus Ex aged well too--I played it for the first time around 1.5 years ago, and it blew me away. Still does.
