IP.BIN Creator v1.0 released.

Post by SiZiOUS »

This program create a custom IP.BIN for SEGA Dreamcast.
You can also add a custom logo, inside the IP.BIN.

You don't need any tutorial for this app.
It very simple. Logos must be 320x90 maximum with 128 colors, in the MR format. Don't be afraid by the MR format, this program convert it from any image type (like BMP, GIF, JPG and PNG).

Thanks to ADK/Napalm for LogoTools and _kRYPT for MR-TOOL source code.

Do you think its really proper to have a homebrew release that allows for the creation of Katana ip.bins?

Don't remove the program. It's a useful utility which I'm sure you worked hard to make, and you created it with the best intentions. There is an ip.bin replacement avaliable at boob.co.uk that should work just fine for homebrew. If you do an updated version, you might want to have it make an ip.bin like that, and don't set any of the flags that would allow it to run katana/WinCE binaries if that's going to be an issue. Otherwise, just be glad that you made something that's going to be of use to us.

by the way, the IP.bin replacement is not 100 % legal ...

from http://www.boob.co.uk/devtools.html

IP.BIN replacement
Released: 15-Jan-2002
By: LiENUS
Info: This as far as I know is the first LEGAL ip.bin replacement for the dc, however it is pretty much untested, so far it has been tested with the following:
DCfloys, Wolf3D/DC, PAL Enforcer, and dcload (serial).
This IP.BIN is intended to replace the one from Sega and make it closer to being legal, there are 3 bootstraps in IP.BIN, the Sega one, boostrap #1, and bootstrap #2. The Sega one CANT be replaced, and is the only one remaining in the latest release.

If it can't be replaced, then case law shows that they can't go after you for using it. That was pretty much the outcome of Sega v. Accolade. They had to include a certain piece of Sega code for their unlicensed Genesis cartridge to boot, and Sega took them to court and lost.

Exactly. If it is an issue for a developer personally to use only the bare minimum Sega code required to boot, there's the IP.bin replacement I mentioned.

First I thought it had the same options as ip4win. But this is just the ultimate ip.bin creation tool. Saves me lot's of time: very usefull! Now we just need to figure out what all those options does (most interesting: selection of media with cdrom1/1, cdrom 1/2 and 2/2).
