there's been a lot of topics asking that same question. not saying that you should go to them.. but from what i've heard it's pointless. wait... it is pointless! because cd roms cant read the gdroms correctly.

Actually, you're wrong. The laser assembly is actually a standard CD-ROM laser. It's the actual GD-ROM controllers that allows the discs to be read. Midnight Obsidian proved this theory when he replaced the laser assembly in his Dreamcast with one from a portable CD player.

From all the tech sheets I've read, I was under the impression that it was the Firmware in the Drive that changed the way it could read. The only problem I've found it finding a laser with the same housing to fit the GD-ROM.

The Only laser swapping I've done is swapping a Yamaha laser into the later Samsung GD-ROMs. I've never tried a normal CD laser... I shall try on one of my DC's and see what happens.

hey

yeah man... it should work

when people say that gd-roms and cd-roms are different internal.. and then they start saying how the firmware is different.. just ignore them

the only difference in a gd-rom and a cd-rom is that gd-rom minimizes error correction... therfore being able to fit much more on a regular cd. (with the right cd) thats why it has the strict message of not to scratch the dreamcast game cds - you can even get regular cd-rom with a bit of tweaking to read sega dreamcast disc... but lets not get into that...]

so it will work.. you just need to do it right..

i say, in that case, wouldnt it be a lot easier to make a slot or tray loading DC?

just get a regular CD-rom, and either tweak it to read GD discs, or frankenstein the original GD firmware into it

MidnightObsession did this and it worked fine. Look up the post using the search function.

And no it would n't be easier to make a slot or tray loading DC as you still can't easily connect the firmware upto it.

Yea my slot loading dreamcats never got too far.
I got stuck at this point. I kept th eorgnial laser asembly, and built the dvd drive around it. I just couldnot get it to push down on the disc to make it read.
