My dream job is the be a Janitor for the state. People think I am crazy for wanting that instead of the railroad, but I look at it like this:

-Retire from the State in 20 years, 45 years with the Railroad.

-Steady hours, many holidays off, assigned off-days. With the Railroad you are on call 24/7 and get 1 off-day a week and you don't even know when you get it.

-Pay wise I would make about $500 less a month then the average state Janitor, but Id probably only work 40hours a week and not have to stay out of town and lose sleep, etc.

-Cleaner oddly enough. I look like I have been rolling around in the dirt usually when I get home from work. Id probably stay cleaning as a Janitor.

At first I decided I would never work as a Janitor at the school, cause Im sure we all can think of some good dirty bathroom stories from our school days. But then I started thinking of the above, and the fact I would have all holidays off, etc and I think I coudl handle it.

Yea some people have big dreams for life, all I ask for is a job that does not consume my life.

I am constantly on call and basically I work the jobs nobody else wants, or I work when somebody has a off-day, sick day, etc. It could be as easy as getting onto a coal train and riding to the next Yard, or it could be getting on a switcher working 12 hours trying to switch industries between Russel and Columbus. That basically means you stand out on the track and put cars in certain spots all hours of the day any weather conditions.

One of the jobs they have is supposed to be called for 3:00 a.m. 7 days a week. Right now nobody will even take that job cause it works 12 hours and obviously the hours such. To top it off they 95% of the time can't get the train put together in time and the job ends up being called anywhere from 1 to 4 hours late. When nobody takes a job the extra board has to work it, which is what Im on. If you have high seniority you can do what is called "Kick" other people and take there off-days. On the extra board you have one 24 hour period of a off-day, and normally you don't get it cause somebody higher up will just kick you when its time for your off-day. Then you get forced to there spot which is normally closer to being called to work AND that has a off-day that is probably several days away.

That is why I hate it. I can't plan nothing, I can't ever sleep without worry that phone will ring, and I hate working 12 hours out in all weather switching a bunch of crap. I also hate not knowing when you will be going in to work, and not knowing when you will get off. More often then enough you will go out expecting a quick trip then end up being out there for 14 or more hours. Granted you are only allowed to work 12 hours, but that don't mean you can't sit out on a train for infinite amount of time. Usually once your 12 hours have been worked they will call you a cab. Of course the cab driver get s a 1 hour call, and he might have 2 hours drive to get to you. Its just not worth the money. I was happier working at the hospital cleaning old peoples piss up. At least then I knew I had 2 days off per work and I knew that when the clock hit 11:30 my ass was out of there. Also I didn't have $100 a month union dues, $200 month medical dues, and $500 a month RRTIER (Retirement I won't be seeing).

You might make a lot per hour with the RR, but when you think of all the fees they take out, all the time spent unpayed in a hotel out of town, and all the hours you have to sit near a phone waiting to be called its not really as much as its cracked up to be.

UPS isn't really a good job, it's 7.50 an hour, for hard labor, all night long, medical bennies after 6 months. You don't get to be a delivery guy unless you work there for 5 years or some bs. I've got an interview which is more "let's see if this kid looks strong" down down at the docks, making 10 an hour, hopefully I'll make cash, but you never know. Basically the job entails going from barges on the Mississippi river to tossing 100-200lb bags of potatoes and onions onto carts to load on shore and then breaking the bags down into nets, and tossing them onto freightliners or semitrucks, whatever you call em, my dad used to do it.

I'll prolly end up doing that at night, altho I am also looking into Valet parking which is a far easier job.

Have any of you guys been security guards before? Is it hard, does it pay well and will they hire an 18 year old?

Whoever says working for the city or the state is stupid, is stupid themselves and don't know nothing. You can rack up some money with jobs like that.

I didnt mind UPS, I only said it because it is definately a night job, and less dangerous than security. Also the benefits were cool. We dont have much in CA for night jobs besides UPS, Security, or stocking walmart/supemarkets. The supermarket job might be cool. Throwing sacs on the Mississippi sounds tiring, and really cold out on the water. Sounds fun though, maybe put out some trot lines on your break or do some catfish noodling?

Night-time security guard! That sounds like the perfect directionless career for an unmotivated jerkoff like me! I need to try that... I can pretend I'm really important but there aren't much demands and I can sleep all day!
