Prevent death.
I've been playing the DC system for over 3 years now and during those 3 years I've had 5 DC systems that died. Im sick and tired of buying the DC system over and over and I can't find a brand new DC system for a reasonable price ($100?...I'll pass), but I can get a used DC for $20 at my local pawn shop. The one that I have now (5th) died yesterday (4 weeks after I fixed it), is there a way that I can prevent my next DC from death?

I bought mine from Babbages a year ago. The model is 1999, so its real old. And it hasn't been modified at all.
If you play too many copies on it, it wont do anything too it. Are you letting them cool down? Maybe there is a short on you wall outlet. Do you still have them? You can sell them for parts on ebay.
What exactly is not working? Will it power on or is the motherboard blown? Maybe its trying to read a real scratched up cd. My friends psone did that and the thing caught on fire. It was a cool bonfire, though.

No, I play the DC as much as the Xbox, lol. Yes, I still have the parts laying around and I might sell them on Ebay. Well, all of them had the same problem, 1.) all of them were reseting 2.) all of them stopped reading games unless I left the lid open a little 3.) all of them died and didn't show up on the TV (the screen went blank) whenever I cut them on. Yeah, all of them were model 1999 and I got them from Gamestop/Ebgames.
Originals and backups (cd-r)Perhaps it is what you are playing on it?
On the floorPerhaps it is where you keep it?
Many ppl have told me that its because all of my DCs were old, but I know a few chicks that still have their working 1999 DCs.

if you're keepin it on the floor.... wait i'm getting ahead of myself is it a carpted floor? is it just on the floor or do you have it on a book or somthing? i'd suggest getting yourself a nice little table for it. i have a glass end table for all of my dc stuff.
I was keepin it on the floor (No carpet)

Probably due to abuse from previous owners. That's what you get with a used DC. Your best bet is just to buy another one, and hope for the best. Or get a new one and forget about it. New is the best bet. The only reason the one I bought (new) died is because of shoddy controllers and mods gone wrong.
Dreamcast: It's thinking. And it thinks you suck.

Can you open some of them up and post some pictures?
Maybe you can take a q-tip and clean the laser.
Are the cough::backups::cough and originals really scratched?
The cables are working, right?
Maybe you just have bad luck. Stay away from everyone elses dreamcast.
You're invitiing a plague on all dreamcasts..... Anyone have an anti-curse spell?

i've had my DC for 4 years, and only had to manually change the Lens, and the Fan twice, it's seen better days, but it does depend on where you set your DC, and if you let it cool off or not.
the only thing is with mine, it's only set up to play burned games, it no longer plays the originals.
i kinda did that by accident and i wasnt expecting to do that, but at the same time, it was the sweetest accident i ever done.
i was trying to get my burned games to work right, then i learned that my DC wasnt able to play burned games from the start, so i had to adjust the power to the lens, and after going through a few DC's , taking parts from the other ones and replacing and adding on to my original one, i finally got it like i wanted, but it came with the sacrifice of not being able to play my original discs.
still in all, im satisfied with mine ^_^

<am i human or wolf, it is up to you to decide
If you come to me saying you've tried everything, that only tells me that you've tried my stuff also, and it didn't work. so no sense in me helping you. Plain & Simple

They're $20 here too at my local pawn shop and they have loads of them.lol do u want me to buy you one (you send me the money) and i'll buy you one they're only $20 here.
I never changed the fan in my DC , could this be the fan, because the fan doesn't come on anymore in 2 of my DCs? I won't put it on the floor anymore, I'll go with dcmodder's technique and use a glass table or something.i've had my DC for 4 years, and only had to manually change the Lens, and the Fan twice, it's seen better days, but it does depend on where you set your DC, and if you let it cool off or not.
