I thought it was just the battle music and fanfare that was the same? The fight against Culex, right?

I just checked, and as I suspected, he has not appeared in any Final Fantasy game. The battle music that plays is taken from Final Fantasy IV, as is the fanfare music (with a hint of FFVI).Nyarlathotep wrote:It is, from ff5 if I remmeber correctlymelancholy wrote:Yeah, that one. "Contrary to popular opinion, Culex is NOT actually from any Final Fantasy games. He is designed to look like a number of Final Fantasy boss characters, but does not appear in any game other than [Super Mario RPG]."

I think it's a common thing. Everyone says it.
I remember seeing an advertisement for shenmue in a game. Don't remember what though. Virtua Cop 2 seems to come to mind..

I'm fairly certain it is an actual FF boss who was either in one of the Japan only ones, or was renamed or cut in the american translation - that site you posted is in no way an authoritative source given that all that info is reader submitted, but I don't really want to wade through a bunch of square-obssessive forums to get at the 'actual truth'az_bont wrote:I just checked, and as I suspected, he has not appeared in any Final Fantasy game. If you do a Google search for "culex" and "final fantasy", you'll find quite a few more examples:Nyarlathotep wrote:I'm fairly certain it is an actual FF boss who was either in one of the Japan only ones, or was renamed or cut in the american translation - that site you posted is in no way an authoritative source given that all that info is reader submitted, but I don't really want to wade through a bunch of square-obssessive forums to get at the 'actual truth'

"Culex was actually NOT in Final Fantasy 4, just placed in SMRPG by Square. The music is from FF4, also stuck into SMRPG by Square, probably because it's the most recognizable boss theme..."
http://www.ocremix.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR00790
"Culex is not from any Final Fantasy game. He is just a generic, FF-ish character."
http://www.classicgaming.com/tmk/mailbag_010817.shtml
"[Culex] appeared in Mario RPG, but is obviously related to the Final Fantasy games though he never actually appears in them."
http://www.lemmykoopa.com/lk21/lk21-5-culex.html
"culex is only in supermario rpg.
no final fantasy games."
"Yeah. He's not in any Final Fantasy. The only things the battle has in common with the Final Fantasy series are the four crystals, and the victory music."
"Culex is only in Super Mario RPG. Just because he has FFIV's boss theme and that he is a dark knight doesn't mean he is from that series. He is only seen in Super Mario RPG. Oh yeah, and they threw the FF victory theme when you beat him in just for kicks."
"Culex is a unique enemy, made in Amano's artwork style..."
http://forums.eyesonff.com/archive/inde ... 49115.html
"A hidden boss in Monstro Town is Culex. Although this boss doesn't appear in any Final Fantasy, his cohorts, the four Crystals, should be familiar to everyone! His boss music is identical to that of FF4, and the victory music is the ever-loved Victory Fanfare."

Also, RPGClassics has complete lists of every enemy in the games, complete with pictures:
Final Fantasy I
Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy V
Final Fantasy VI
No mention of Culex - and no sight of him, either.
By the way, Final Fantasy V was the Japan-exclusive title, at least until it got translated and released on the Playstation in North America and Europe several years later.

i think when this topic was orginally posted he meant it was an unexcepted reference because the 2 games had nothing to do with each other...meaning wasn't from the same series not from the same developer or publisher.
but keeping with what this topic has turned into with........Pac Man World 2 has references to Dig Dug with those little red creatures being a baddie in the game...then in Pac Man World one theres a whole level based on Galaga/Galaxian..not only that ,but in both Pacman World games the item you collect to get into a bonus stage is a Galaxian sprite.
another would be in Mario RPG(SNES) Link sleeping in the bed at that inn in Mapletown(not sure if thats the name its been yrs since i played it) and Samus sleeping in the bed in the Mushroom Kingdom Castle which i have yet to see but i seen screen shots.
The mention of Nights references in Sonic Adventure 2 for DC its in the GC verison as well which also theres a nights reference in the casino level in Sonic Adventure its a whole pinball thing
less anyone forget the Mario 64 references in Zelda OoT when you first meet Zelda ,or how about in the new Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes the Mario & Yoshi reference plus there were a lot of nintendo references in the Donkey Kong Country games to either systems or other mascots
