Wat the... The copper stuff is starting to peel off the PCB!

Post by sonick »

So i was trying to mod my LED for fun to see if i could do it with a temporary red Hi-inTensity (The white kind) LED...

I started unsoldering the orange one when it looks like one of the contact pads of one of the holes is starting to PEEL OFF the board...

But i still went ahead and soldered the red LED on...

Now, how do i fix this peeling??? Has this happened to anybody?

just make sure the solder touches the copper and the led touches the solder, and you will be fine. The fact that it's peeling means you have put too much heat on the pcb.

yeah, too much heat on the board....

did you warm up the iron before applying it? a lot of ppl will tend to warm it ON the board, which isnt too good

yeah, i did warm it up real good, but then i was using a desoldering braid to get the solder off, rather than pulling it off when it was melted...

it took awhile to get the solder onto the braid

I pulled my LED out. I didn't even use the soldering iron to melt it, but after I installed the new light, it won't come on. I noticed that I ripped those copper rings off (both). I saw in an earlier post that someone just followed the tracer and soldered a wire to the LED. I was going to ask if I should do that.... seeing as both are ripped off. I'm going to try it anyways.

yes you have to solder a wire to the tracing now. Please don't rip your LED out again.......

Yeah, I had the same problem. If the thing DOES peel off, it's an easy fix. Check it out.

Thanks man. I followed your pic there and it's working again. On another note, I thoroughly enjoy ripping the LED out though.... I guess I won't do it again though, hehe.

Gutzman: I'm happy that I could help!
SonicK: Just wire the right lead of the LED to either of the solder points on the far ends. They're common grounds. >= )
