GBA Emu for Dreamcast Homebrew Screenshots and more
Most will know that DCEmu.co.uk has been down for nearly 3 days and while we have been down, we have had a great chance to play with the GBA emu for the Dreamcast by Troy Davis (GPF), we have 22 screnshots and very high quality too (thanks to LyonHrt and his DVD recorder), heres our findings so far :
its still slow, sound doesn't effect it though speed wise
the slowest games though seem to use a lot of effects
like the racing games using 3d type effects, they really slowed down
the fastest games were probably the simplist
wizards was fairly playable
mtype was too slow, wizards was ok, air hockey was quite good i enjoyed playing that
the aladin game didn't get past its menu, thrust was ok
didn't know the controls that well though.
deflector was playable thats a homebrew puzzle game
had it on the st not sure how this version plays
feels very similar, the most playable commercial game was bomberman.
So there you have it a mini review of whats been tryed so far and check out 22 great screenshots at http://www.dcemu.co.uk/gbaemu.shtml and the second page http://www.dcemu.co.uk/gbaemu2.shtml

A few people actually have monitors hooked up to their DC (and I am pretty sure Ian Micheal is one of them).

Yeah I use a monitor on my dreamcast dev box, and I have another hooked up to my TV in the livingroom.
Lot easier to develop with the dreamcast next to my pc, I used to have to burn the bin to cdr and then walk to the livingroom to test it Glad I finally bought a serial cable.
Been really busy lately, so I still have a lot of work to do on the emulator.

Yep, i took images of the menu as proof , i'm just good at getting a good capture thats all
And that game is the barbarian remake, for some reason player1 controls player2 as well.
I can't find his home page, but you can get it from gbadev here

There are many things bothering me about that picture of Barbarian. First of all, it is the same picture as found on gbadev.org. It just has an extra black border added to the edges. The picture its self is the same size and contains the same image down to the point. So I thought, maybe I can be like them, and took a game image from GBAdev.org and put a little black border around the edge. The result?
Which looks like the picture on GBAdev.org. This leads me to beleive that these pictures are fake!(at least the ones with the black border)

Yeah! The emulator can't use the same resolution as the ones taken on Visualboy Advance! Oh, wait a minute - the emulator is based on Visualboy Advance.Wsttrollboy wrote:This leads me to beleive that these pictures are fake!(at least the ones with the black border)
To put it simply, the emulator has black borders because it's running at the GBA's native resolution (or a multiple of it). Meaning that when you show it on full screen on the television, you get black borders around the parts that aren't displayed.

[offtopic]hee, i was thinking in all the idiots i ever saw on forums criticizing this scene with quotes pre-mades like "if i want emulators, i play them on pc. and wtf is dreamcast? i own PlayBoxCube 9000XP... why bother if dc can emulate GBA, if it could't run fullspeed snes?". this type of mind gets me really pissed. i think it's like my pc could emulate a ps2 but don't get a nice neogeo emu. each system has his own particularities. i hate comparissons betwen emulators whose systems aren't even alike (think compare a GBA with a segaCD ). and i'm way to happy DC will survive many time yet, thanks to the homebrew scene.

going back to topic, i would love if this project don't come out so soon. would be better if GPF waste his time perfecting it, speeding it out, i'm content just knowing it's progressing and seeing the screenshots. btw, he has many other things to do in his life.
i know nobody afford with me, but ehh, my opinion eh

I can understand you being skeptical, but honestly - have GPF or Ian Micheal ever done anything to make you doubt their honesty when it comes to their releases? GPF is a trusted source, and Ian Micheal is actively testing this emu. They have my complete support, and they should have yours as well.Wsttrollboy wrote:This leads me to beleive that these pictures are fake!(at least the ones with the black border)

Wow you think they're fake, meaning too perfect?!
When i showed you the webpage, i noticed they happened to have a similar shot, its just a conincedence.
Ok heres what i'd consider a crappy shot. Why? because the image is moving there is interlacing, so its not very clean.
Note its pretty big so the url is here
