There IS an awesome DC VCD player...... it just isn't free.
You CAN play VideoCD's in the Dreamcast with EXCELLENT
quality playback.
There were THREE "commercial" VCD players that came
out of Hong Kong. The VERY FIRST player was the one that
was "ripped" and is currently being distributed - some call it
the "xinghong" player. It has no controls, features choppy
playback, and out of sync audio - it is garbage, basically. It
had a "dongle" unit that plugged into the front of the DC, but
this was also removed for the pirate release. The second player
had the same software but also came with a remote to control
the player, still a crap player though. The third and latest VCD
player for the Dreamcast uses the same remote and "dongle"/
IR reciever as the second but features a much, much better
player. THIS is the one you want. Because of the dongle, and
the players need for a remote to even function this player
will most likely NOT be "ripped". Anyway, the playback is
full screen, 30fps with perfectly synced audio. You can play a
VCD ( no need to spend hours "re-encoding" ) or even .mpg
or .mpeg files that are just on a CD-ROM ( it does have to be
formatted mode 2 I believe ). As I said the playback is very
very good, suprisingly so even. I used my DC VGA box and
played the same file on my PC ( 800 MHz Athelon, 256 MB
RAM ) and on the DC and switched back and forth to compare.
Believe it or not IMO the DC player ACTUALLY BESTS
Windows Media player - it's the real deal folks. I know VCD,
I've burned my own discs way back since the Philips CD-i days,
this player is good. To use it you sinply plug in the IR unit and
put in the software disc ( It used to come on a CD-R with a
white remote but lately it's a silver remote and a pressed 3 inch
silk-screened software disc ) and boot the DC. After the player boots
you can swap to a VCD and select the "avseq01.dat" file and
begin playing. You can pause, stop, ff or rw - as well as align
the screen, adjust size, pick one channel for kareoke VCD's, mute
the volume, adjust the volume up or down, adjust balance, etc.
My only complaints are A: no selectable on-screen time count and
B: the ff and rw function kinda sucks. It's not "constant", you have
to keep hitting the button to continue searching - it basically just
jumps ahead or back a minute or so. Also, the range of the remote
is pretty weak, only 10, maybe 12 feet. But it IS a "bootleg" Chinese
product, and the bottom line is the playback quality is good and
thats what really matters. This player will also load an MP3 player
if you swap to an mp3 disc after booting. It's a good player but
the actual sound quality IS a hair better on some of the other DC
MP3 players. Oh, yea - the other DC player - (Gyplay)the free one - can
play .mpg files but it's not as good as the one reviewed above. To
get any sort of good playback you have to re-encode the file as a
VBR and lower the framerate to 24 fps - it's great as a free player
but basically it cannot play Video CD's.
Hope that helps....
You can buy it here:
http://www.lik-sang.com/catalog/product ... ts_id=1418&
or here:
http://www.playthegames.com
Also, Gamestop ( Babbages, Funcoland, etc. ) are now selling an "Innovation" branded version of the above player here:
( or bug your local retailer )
http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=801396
Make SURE it's the one that does VCD's and MP3's and you'll be all set.
P.S. - Just a warning there has been a high number of these players that are dead out of the box - I've ordered one from Play the Games for me and two from Lik Sang as gifts - one was DOA. Upon closer inspection it was just a bad soldering job on the IR unit but either way you may want to ask them to test it before shipping or buy it as local as possible.

"why pay 25 dollars for a dreamvcd player, when.......a dvd/vcd player can be bought of ebay for 60 dollarS?"
Why pay $60+$20 shipping for a DVD player when you can go pick up an Apex AD1500, hack it region free/no macrovision and pay $70 for it at a local store? Heh.
Though yeah, I could NEVER imagine buying a standalone VCD player (well, ok, I've bought two in my life - but both were portables and one had a 5.5" LCD) considering how cheap DVD players are already.

Yes ! the Apex AD-1500 is AMAZING! I just bought one 2 days ago,($130 CDN) and thats the best price I've ever seen for any dvd player. Plus, it has MP3 support! In fact, in about an hour I will will be playing a VCD on a CD-RW!! I thought the AD1500 only had CD-R compat., but after reading the reviews on vcdhelp.com (a great site), it plays both "without a hitch". Happy happy, joy joy!LarTrak wrote:Why pay $60+$20 shipping for a DVD player when you can go pick up an Apex AD1500, hack it region free/no macrovision and pay $70 for it at a local store? Heh.
Buy this player and forget about DC VCD players. They are a rip off and the only "free" ones are warez and suck ass.

My old ( first gen ) DVD player didn't read CD-R's ( or even most RW's half the time ) so I needed a VCD player ( besides my PC ). I bought the DC "Dreammovie" player and the DVD remote for my Xbox and gave my old DVD player to my parents, problem solved. The Apex's are nice ( though I sometimes hear of people going through a few units before finding one that works ) but it was just cheaper and a whole 'lot more awesome to have the good 'ol Dreamcast playing Video CD's. I've wanted it to do that since the DAY I've owned it. Now it's a lean, mean, gaming/VCD/MP3/Internet gaming machine, and it's small and has a VGA output. Plus, having a Dreamcast in the livingroom and sharing a monitor with my PC means I can watch on either one - nice if the PC's tied up.........
P.S. - Considering the VCD playback quality I've seen on most DVD players, I'd even go as far to say that the Dreamcast with "Dreammovie" tops them, IMO.

Haha one post mentioned seeing Resident Evil for free, then another post had this address, http://www.playthegames.com/, where ohn the main page they're selling a modded Gamecube which includes a free copy of the Resident Evil movie.
Don't get confused Lord of the Ring 4CD movie set is in SVCD
SVCD has Mpeg2 for video, there is no way you can run that on Dreamcast.

Hehe... perhaps it's a huge mistake, but then again, they are probably giving you a Resident Evil VCD to test out the GC's mpeg1 capabilities- ...with 4 sets of embedded asian subtitiles.
