Earlier in the thread someone was mentioning a hub system for Quake. I did this once for, I believe ELEK, but he decided not to use it and use Mindrcime's code instead (hmpf). You can find it here http://www.inside3d.com/frikbot/hub.zip (I think). It's probably way too much saving for the DC (makes a save game of every level) but it's fine for mods aimed at the PC.

The painkeep hub isn't quite the same thing.
It's one map the game keeps coming back to and players can select a map by jumping into one of the many gates.
What was being talked about was a single player system where the player could travel from level to level and monsters remained killed, etc. Like Hexen2's hub system or Quake 2 for that matter.
Doing a hub like painkeep is mind boggingly easy. Make a map, count votes, changelevel. That's all it is.

I have Hexen II but never played it so far... Basically I lost the interest when I discovered that each character has only 3 weapons, and most of them are contact weapons...
Also there's some areas that I just can't find where's the damn items... like the windmill key...
Quake II system is really cool, but if I remember it right there's no corpses when you come back... I've also stopped playing it because it doesn't work in 512x384 in my pc...
Quake 1 video support is MUCH better
